I have, what I assume is a noisy lifter, certainly a variable tap, TBH I think the lifter has now collapsed or stuck down, The engine has what I think are SBD cams, 196 springs to mind? I know I can pull the lifters and dismantle them, clean out thoroughly, and re-install, do one at a time, and re oil, and refit back in original holes, then hope I have sorted it, down the pub yesterday my mate suggested I buy new lifters and use those, plenty of Zinc based oil and cam lube, off we go, I have my thoughts about this question, but I'm asking for opinions,

You can just fit new ones without changing anything else. They're not like pushrod V8 stuff where they can throw a hissy fit if they're mismatched to the cam.

You've got to remove the cams to get the lifters out, so doing one at a time is idiotic. Remove all 16 to clean them in one go. If you gently squeeze them in a vice first, you'll probably be able to determine which ones don't feel the same.
They come apart by banging them upside down against a block of wood. Clean them in solvent, blow the holes clear, and I reassemble them in ATF so they pump up quickly.

I just rebuilt an XE head a couple of weeks ago - they always tap in XE's for some reason as well, I've never had one that didn't have a few tappers. You can depress them by pressing them down with the rocker cover off and the cam lobe pointing away. I don't think cleaning will do any good tbh, I tried that years ago and I think it was still the same, it's a characteristic of the engine it seems, no harm in trying though.
