ChasR thanks for the input to be honest i don’t think there is anything wrong with the gearbox was more thinking if the 13/60 gearbox was an improvement over the original 1200 item. i can see i have bought the lowest powered car in the range so will definitely look into getting it running to its best ability. bodywork wise there are a few dings which i am not bothered about and the car will look better once washed and cut back and polished. the door bottoms are the only bit that will need sorting the rest is pretty good odd little touch up here and there no doubt. it’s had an alternator conversion too which is good and save carrying out this mod in the future.

If you can find where the key code is stamped on the lock you'll be able to get a key really easily, they're readily available online from lots of different suppliers. Boot lock might be on the shank of the lock itself so you might have to remove that from the car to find it, glovebox is probably stamped on the inside of the glovebox somewhere (which isn't that useful if you can't get in) but might also be the same as the boot key anyway. thanks for the info i have a big pile of FS keys somewhere and i have a good locksmith locally too. |

just invested in a new coil ,points ,condenser , carb cleaner , lead replacement additive and some redex type stuff.
mate is going to bring a box of tools so we’ll have a play and get it running better before the drive home.

That does look nice and clean, take some fresh petrol too it might have been in there for ages.
The 1147 spitfire made around 60hp up from about 40hp of the herald, I think they had a higher CR differnt cam and twin SU's, a head skim and twin carbs would be pretty straight forward.

It was when you were referring to gearbox swaps to a later 'box. I was merely saying if you do it, go with a recon item, mainly as the syncros are weak in these 'boxes, albeit they are 'simple' to a gearbox rebuilder to rebuild. |

well that was interesting day went to pick up the car and i knew it wasn’t running right so took a carb service kit , new coil and points. after stripping and cleaning the carb , fitting and setting the points. we were off ! got about half a mile something wasn’t right. stripped the carb again and played about with it , diaphragm in back to front , i replaced it the way it came out so obviously that was wrong previously , played with the timing and we were off ! again! something still amiss but hey it’s only a 40 mile drive home what could go wrong. it really didn’t want to go up hills and at one point nearly came to a stand still much to the annoyance of a big line of traffic behind me. under load up hills the car didn’t want to rev the car just got slower and slower. so i took to attacking the hills and apparently hitting the dizzy heights of 54 mph on one downhill stretch as we took a run up to another hill. other than the running issue the car feels tight , no squeaks , rattles , no wandering ,no diff or wheel bearing whining, brakes haven’t been touched in years but felt good and pull up straight , oh it has discs, i found out today didn’t notice on the original viewing and found out on the 1200’s ether were an optional extra 🤣 so work to do.. i took a mechanic friend with me today and we don’t think it’s a carb issue we think there is a timing issue and advance / retard isn’t working right so will look into picking some parts up to try and fix this.   it’s home and now wrapped up , i have to empty one of my rented garages of hoarded motorbike and lambretta bits to make a 12x6 foot space to park it in as i really want to keep it out of the elements.   |

Well done. Congratulations now the fun starts grizzfirst thing is get it running right and into a garage next is to strip out the interior and coat all the voids etc with anti corrosion spray , clean all the interior panels , seats and refit the carpet. also treat any surface rust underneath and spray that with anti corrosion too. then i can think about lowering and 5.5j wheels , probably steels i’m thinking. i won’t be re-inventing anything here , just following tried and tested mods ooh look a supercharger !. no no must resist 🤣🤣🤣 |

I was wondering as it doesen't have a proper filler cap if muck or water had got in the tank. it’s been kept in a garage for years and no idea how long that cap has been on so it is a possibility and anything is really at this point. i have a new advance and retard unit and vacuum hose coming to eliminate that. meanwhile moving stuff around in the garage i.e. just being tidier. i am closer to getting a car shaped space available. |

Late-ish 1200 Herald should be 48bhp…. Everything needs to be just right to achieve that. Ignition timing, valve clearances, , carb, even cam timing (stretched chain?).
They do tune up quite well with mk 2 Spitfire parts. Engine swaps from 13/60s or Spitfires is straight forward. Would have had discs as standard at that age.
All Heralds had 3 synchro gearboxes. You get used to it. Or use the gearbox from a MkIV Spit which is 4 synchro and nearly a direct swap.

Counter-intuitively, always suspect and check the 'new' or (most) 'recently replaced' part first..
Nice car. Bournemouth area reg. When my grandfather died my father inherited his, so we had a very similar-looking one a family runabout for a year or two.

so have now found there is 2 types of pump a long arm and short arm and a spacer involved etc so after finding the carb diaphragm fitted wrongly and the guy has said he isnt mechanically minded i’ll suspect everything 👍. been advised to check the tank to pump fuel line to see f it’s clogged up etc , i’m sure i’ll get to the bottom of it . mean while a herald shaped specs has almost appeared in the garage too. photos below was before i took all the motorbike exhausts away so hopefully the car will just squeeze in. there’s actually 2 whole motorbikes in there in pieces and a series 1 lambretta as well as various body panels and 2 more frames and loads more stuff 🤔🤪 one frame and swing arm is tied up to the block and tackle frame 😜  |
