Morning, after some advice on how to recommission this compressor. Friend of mine pulled it out of an old outbuilding where it’s been sat for some years. He has one already so this one is now my first compressor! Rather than just plug it in and try turning it on, can the experienced hands tell me what I should check first please? Would this sort of oil be ok? www.toolstation.com/compressor-oil/p94582 My Google ability is poor – haven’t found a manual online yet as it’s an old model – 2002 if the label’s right. Did find this Draper branded one – which looks similar: www.drapertools.com/product/31254/belt-driven-air-compressor-100l-2-2kw/ Thanks in advance, Steve

Pump looks identical to my Clarke one from 2019, so I would guess that they're generic Chinese made and all much the same. I change the oil in mine every 6 months + perhaps wrongly use whatever spare engine oil I have.
If it were mine, I'd drain the air tank, change the oil, turn it on, get the oil nice and hot and change it again. Then probably fully drain the air tank to see what comes out.
But, I am certainly no expert. Check the relief valve by pulling the ring while it's charging and make sure it turns off at the proper pressure, think mine is 120psi.

As long as they pulleys turn by hand and it’s got oil on the dipstick, just plug it in and turn it on.
As Tom says, checking the pressure switch is decent is the biggest thing on an old compressor. They’re fairly unreliable anyway so just keep an eye on it and check it does actually turn off or the blowoff works. You can take the readings with a pinch of salt, they’re often 10-20% out on the gauge, but if it gets to 150psi without turning off or the blowoff valve goes, turn it off and test the blowoff or turn down the switch with the adjuster screw on top.

Thanks chaps - first dumb newbie question - which is the relief valve/ring to check?

If it's been sat for years then I would be very wary of the tank. Rust can seriously weaken them.

so I would guess that they're generic Chinese made and all much the same. Very likely generic Italian. Morris63: 2002 isn't old, we run compressors from the '50s and '70s!
