Hotwire et al feel free to delete this if it's against policy or shift it elsewhere. Just wanted to make folks aware this is coming soon. Only all commercials at first but cars will be next, looks to include the ring road as well There's a Facebook group here: www.facebook.com/groups/1801903783494447?group_view_referrer=searchAnd a proposed demonstration on the 4tg February. As you will know if you filled in the consultation there was no way to say this is a terrible idea, it will kill of the city centre even more and if you stopped blocking roads with planters etc the traffic would actually flow reducing pollution..

It will be extended to all vehicles as soon as the income drops off & I believe there are plans to extend it outwards as far as the bocham parkway - all the way to meadhowhead. I'm glad it's on the 4th and not next week as I have to actually go into the office lol.

That's B&Q and Wickes lost all their small builder trade as well as they are both in the zone

I saw this for the first time this week, I’m 20 miles away and it’s the first I’ve heard of it. As I’m just outside the borough we didn’t even get consulted.
It’s not gunna be good for Sheffield or the surrounding area. Sheffield is by no means a polluted city these days. Yeah it’s a small area now (although it includes the parkway so you can’t even take the standard ‘through route’ designed to avoid smaller streets) it’s obviously only going to expand. It’s an area of low incomes and older vehicles. The bar is set unreasonably high, euro 6 diesel is about 8-10 years old for commercials, which means super common vehicles like mk7 transits are not eligible. The average age of a commercial vehicle in the area has already been proven to be older than that. Ultimately the ones who will suffer from this are the ones who can’t afford a newer vehicle, not the larger companies who don’t run older vehicles anyway.

Yep, we had to sell our 2008 Hiace (that had 24k on it) and replace it with a leased EV. Was nothing wrong with the Hiace, company had it from new and it was used most days. Annoying thing is the EV isnt big enough to fit the ladders in lol.

As you approach Sheffield Meadowhall junction on the M1 it has been reduced to 60mph for probably 5 yrs or more. They have all the matrix signs lite up saying speed limit reduced for air quality 🤷🏻♂️

I also notice it’s not possible to get into the park and ride at nunnery square without entering the zone- in fact it looks like the zone has been deliberately extended along the parkway a few hundred yards to prevent you doing so. So if you have a non-compliant vehicle and try to use the park and ride to stay out of the centre, you will be penalised 🙄

As it stands with my current fleet, I can’t go in using any of the 3 2.5L or under post-2001 catalytic converter equipped diesels I have, so I’ll have to use any of the vehicles that have an historic exemption, which have zero emissions control and range in size 3.3 to 5.7L. but it’s good for the environment or something 🤷♂️

Not looking forward to when they add cars in and then extend it.
Just another scheme to price people off of the roads...well poorer people.

I think Cities have seen how that there Lundon has just got away with fleecing motorists and just decided that its an excellent way of gebnerating cash. Unfortunately they don't look at the unintended consequences like businesses shutting down and people losing their jobs. The Mayor of London was challenged over why he hadn't published all of the report he had done, but still extends the ULEZ to all areas under his control despite any facts showing it will have minimal effect on pollution but cause less well off people to get rid of their cars or try to buy one that meets the standards. Democracy in action [sic]

While I think we can all agree with what he's saying, it's only because the Mayor is from the other party.

Yes, it’s all about the money. It’s part of the specific plan to get more money out of motorists which is part of the wider government strategy to make sure the poor stay poor and the rich get richer. All councils have been instructed to do so.

They have all the matrix signs lite up saying speed limit reduced for air quality 🤷🏻♂️ same past Newport in south wales, relatively simple physics, but in essence the faster you drive the harder the engine works and the more pollutants its pumping out. fuel is just too expensive to do 70+ everywhere these days anyway so this really doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Yeh I’m sure there is science to it, however, the slower you go the longer you are in a particular area churning out fumes. Maybe it works maybe it’s bs to slow us down, who knows

Newcastle have one starting in a few months. I've told all of my clients I won't be entering the zone at all.

So if you have a non-compliant vehicle and try to use the park and ride to stay out of the centre, you will be penalised 🙄 Trying to avoid stiring the politics, but I note that the Clean Air Zone in Birmingham also manages to encompas every notable car park in the city. I'm all for breathable air, but meh. Nottingham had plans to introduce one, and I know one of the chaps who did the research on the air quality issues which are causing genine health problems for some of our poorest residents but every attempt they make (in Nottingham anyway) seems to be show boating and doesn't fix anything. Anyone who has tried to drive into Nottingham recently will have observed that now if you don't make a strategic decission early on about which roads you come in on, then you are stuck in a grind of city traffic edging round to "the other side of town" for half an hour or more.... I am supportive of the pedestrianisation which they have done, and thats worked well, but the city centre is still dying commercially and theres a lot more that needs to be done not just sticking charging on people using cars. Seems to be we need a better infrastructure and probably more trams.
