Any reason apart from slower warm up (possibly!) why I can't move a thermostat bypass from the bottom hose to the top hose?
Really tight on space and I'll end up with a very convoluted pipe run if I can't!

Hi, Not really no, as you say slower warm up. Is the heater plumbed in because that will help the situation?

It's a Rover V8, intermediate EFI engine which will have carbs on it (don't ask!).
Normally has a big separate 4 outlet thermostat in the bottom hose, I'll be using the old style thermostat in the inlet manifold, this also has 2 thermo switches in it, one for the temp gauge, the other for the rad fan (not the best place!).
I'll convert one of these into an outlet to feed the heater with an external pipe, it will also bypass the thermostat, the heater will return via the manifolds internal pipe to the top hose allowing the pump to spin.
The bottom hose will carry the rad fan switch.
