I didn't have a retro enough car for RRW, my X plate LS430 and Y plate EJ Civic aren't really going to cut it... ...so I bought a car on a whim for £400, from an advert where all the pics were in the dark, wish me luck! 1990 Mazda 626 GLX carby 2L auto, local Devon car all it's life, lots of old history but not a lot of recent (same old story). I know very little about it, dragging it home tomorrow but here's a few initial pics I snapped. It's definitely a "rare but no one cares" sort of car, but if I can get it through an MOT then I think it has potential. The plan is to drive it up north to the Weekender for camping, if it scrubs up alright it may get entered for the white room, but let's not get too excited yet. More details tomorrow!

Weird how some cars make an impact, nothing spectacular, but I loved these when they came out.
I remember the first one I liked was a red one in SA.
Looking forward to what you get to do with it.

Dad had one of these after a Mk1 626 (although his Mk1 was badged as a "Montrose") I was always impressed with what a nice car it was, Keeper if all goes well ?? Nigel Too early to tell! I've only got garage space for one car, but parking for several. Usually I just keep two cars in the fleet so I can alternate and give them both the driving and maintenance time they deserve. The 626 breaks the rule as it's car #3. Come next winter one will have to go, either this or the Civic. The 626 will have to prove itself reliable to dethrone the Civic which does a very good "an car" role, being boringly reliable but also rough enough that I don't have to be precious about it in winter salt and country lanes. ...Looking forward to what you get to do with it. Me too, assuming it gets roadworthy then it'll be getting the standard wheels and lows treatment. Already mulling some wheel ideas...

Managed to get a little time yesterday to drag the 626 to my work unit. First impressions are that it drives well enough, tracking needs doing but it goes and stops well. I cleared out and hoovered the interior, and tried out all the switches and lighting. Surprisingly, everything worked well, even all the backlighting! I've still got to wet vac the seats (especially the driver's seat as it's a bit blackened), but the interior shouldn't need any work which is great. The exterior and door shuts are horrendously grubby, will have to give it a deep clean soon. Under the bonnet, it's also very dirty. Clearly it's not had any maintenance in a long time, so lots of new fluids will be going in for a start. The cooling system unfortunately has a small leak from the radiator seam, probably happened in the latest frost as they've used pure water. Serious flushing required, and I've got a radiator on order. The rusty water stains on the engine are from a previous leak, the shinier water outlet in the middle is the bit the previous owner replaced to fix it. A bit of a clean-up afterwards wouldn't have gone amiss!

I can see a nice car underneath that grot and grim, one of my favourite jobs when getting a new car is to give it a decent deep clean. This looks a decent enough car which has just befallen the usual 'it's just an old car' outlook from previous owners/ owner. There's a few around my area, one being an Olive Green Volvo T5-R estate.

Mine was 2.0 Carbby.
Those 'injector lookalike' steel pipes do some re-circ rubbish 🙄.... My tame mechanic looked into the car running poorly, at a service = chopped the lot out/capped/bentover the stubs 👍😉
..... Deffo fixed that one 🤣🤣
Loved the Lock-Up top/ O.D.
It's a FORD[Mazda] auto... US spec.

This looks a decent enough car which has just befallen the usual 'it's just an old car' outlook from previous owners/ owner. There's a few around my area, one being an Olive Green Volvo T5-R estate. I'm hoping so, the grot can be easily fixed. I think most of the real effort will be in the engine compartment, making sure everything is leak free and with fresh fluids. That cam cover gasket is ordered too to stop that mess. Mine was 2.0 Carbby. Those 'injector lookalike' steel pipes do some re-circ rubbish 🙄.... It's a FORD[Mazda] auto... US spec. OVIMOR Yeah that recirculation stuff is very old hat now compared with modern efforts. The engine's not running great at idle, so all of that will be looked at carefully, along with distributor, leads and all that jazz. This is the 2.0 12V carby with an auto box, hard to find good info on them now as there's not a passionate following for them in the UK and barely any have survived, the American and Australian markets seem to have a bit more info. I'm having to learn a lot of brand names and acronyms to follow the info online, as these were a Mazda 626, Capella, MX-6 or Ford Telstar in various places. Also as they used the 626 name for so long it can be tricky to find info on this specific generation. I'm getting there though, at least I now know the chassis and engine codes to look for!

Ah so you were the one that got there first!! Pretty sure if you'd messaged him 10 minutes later I would have been the one starting this build thread 😂
Car looks great, gutted I didn't beat you to it but very pleased it's ended up here and not on the banger track. Great find.
That interior looks smart, hope to see you with it at RRW!

The plan for today was simple - finish cleaning the interior (wiping down plastics and wet vac the seats), and then drive the car out of the garage, park it for a few days while I worked in my Lexus. The car had other ideas. It all started well enough, got the car cleaned up by lunchtime and was feeling pleased. Went to start the car, lurched it half way out of the garage and it promptly stalled and refused to restart. Some experimenting revealed it would start if you gave it full throttle, but idle was horribly erratic. TBF this was an issue when I picked up the car, I was just hoping not to have to fix it for a little while until I'd done some nicer jobs. Pulled the air can off, went through all the vac lines and found nothing wrong. Also checked all the HT leads, pulled the spark plugs (very sooty and somewhat wet), and checked for spark. Sparked ok, but seems to get less intense over time. Then I spotted this, two loose wires by the distributor. Looks like there was an attempt by the PO to bridge this wire with an extra length and some scotch connectors (yuck). I quickly connected them, no improvement, but the wires on one side look very corroded, water has wicked up them. I think this wire probably goes from the coil to distributor, which is likely to be kind of important. Ran out of time today, but I'm going to remove all the wire and run fresh connectors and wire all the way through. Surprised that the car runs at all with this broken. Looking back at pics from the day I got the car, it was broken then too. I'm not entirely convinced that fixing one wire will solve all my problems, but it must be causing some problem, so let's start there. So at the moment it's immobile and getting in the way of other work. Bummer. Still, interior looks good!

Where has all that 'dried red brick dust stain' come from.... Usually a blown rad hose/rust water &or sealit fix...

Turns out the broken wire went to a capacitor/condensor hidden round the back of the distributor, so not really an essential item. Fixed the wire anyway, hasn't helped. Investigations continue...

Suspecting a spark issue:
- compression is good across all cylinders - plugs are sooting up and getting wet, and all cylinders seem to be affected equally - spark seems to me to get worse as it cranks and become intermittent
I've ordered dizzy cap, rotor arm, spark plugs and coil as these all look past their best. Leads look like they've been replaced more recently, so I'll leave them for now (problem seems to occur on all cylinders, unlikely all four leads are bad).
Going to leave the car for a few days until parts arrive. Also it's too cold in the garage!

Spent some time on the Mazda today, it was a mixed bag. Got the following done: - Checked all brake lines/pads/operation, CV boots, suspension, wheel arches, tyres, inspected for leaks - Oil + filter change - Replaced all wipers, and painted rear wiper arm - Flushed and replaced windscreen washer fluid - Replaced cam cover gasket I was pleasantly surprised by how good all the suspension, braking and drive stuff is. There's basically nothing to be done on those, which is fantastic. The only thing I spotted was one missing locknut on a rear droplink, which is easily fixed. The list of stuff needed to get this to MOT is getting quite a bit shorter: Today I also replaced coil, dizzy cap and spark plugs, hoping that would solve the poor running. Unfortunately the misfire/rough idle issue is still there. I'm still waiting for the rotor arm, I know the one on there looks a bit rough so that's my best hope at the moment.... I'm not willing to make a start on welding until I get the engine running right, so let's see how that goes. I can still get on with a few bits from the list in the meantime: - Radiator replacement/coolant flush - Paint wiper arms on front - Clean outside and engine bay I'll probably tackle that lot early next week, hopefully I'll have a rotor arm by then too.

my first thought about the rough running is how old is the fuel in it?
