Hello everyone
I'm currently in the process of figuring out suitable mods to an E46 for a few cheapo endurance races (like sub €1000 cars only) and the issue of what suspension to use has me scratching my head. The country I'm in doesn't really have a used coilover market so higher end stuff isn't an option for me unless the budget is literally doubled. So I come asking if anyone has used any of the mega cheapo coilovers on ebay? I've seen a little information about maxspeedingrods from US YouTubers and they look somewhat promising but can't find much about the others. JOM, TA Technix, ProSport, Fk etc.
I'm not looking for world class performance but better than standard at the cost of horrendous street performance would be ideal.
Any help is very much appreciated.

Honestly unless standard is completely shot then nothing budget will be any improvement, some slightly stiffer springs to help with a but of body roll wont go amiss thiugh

Your profile says scotland, so surely you can tap into the massive uk car scene and pick up something half tidy used like some bilstein fast road stuff?!

There's pretty much nothing used here apart from the odd set brought in from Germany that's heavily marked up accordingly.

I had jom ones for a couple of years. They were OK but I only did a few hundred miles in the car during that time. I replaced them with kW coilovers and the improvement was very noticeable.

I had Honda accord maxpeedingrods coilovers on my old Honda legend coupe, they weren't as bad as I was expecting although the rears were a bit too stiff really.
I'm just in the process of taking TA Technix lowering springs off my Crossfire to replace with Eibachs as they were awful, the car rode horribly over any slightly bumpy surface, ride height looked decent though

Had Maxpeeding rods on my scirocco when i got it , the fronts were pretty good , the rears on the other hand felt like they’d just fitted a solid iron bar .
My mates Volvo had them fitted , the fronts were extremely hard & the rears were so soft the coils started collapsing .
Have fitted Stance + too a couple of cars now with good results for the price .

Just if anyone else was still following, I fitted some Maxpeedingrods and they were pretty bad. Did a 4 hour endurance race in them and the fronts were ok but the rears were ridiculously soft.

Cheers for updating us on this.
If I were you, I'd be doing the following, albeit it won't be as cheap as you want.
-Eibach Pro Kit or the Sportlines for more lowering ; the spring rates are evenly matched to the stock items, where H&Rs are actually softer. -Sachs dampers, or TRW dampers if you really want to save on the cash. The Sachs are a better damper however.

The FK ones are fine for most uses, I've had them on a ridiculously low Bora and a even more ridiculously low Vectra b.

BC racing are not cheap but they are well priced. Had them on road, race and rally cars and always performed well with no issues.

I've tried the following on cars:
FKs _ Mate's Golf Mk2 GTi KWs - My sold 944 Turbo Bilstein Group A (basically a B6 coilover) - My sold 205 GTi BC Racing - Mate's E36 with an S54 engine swap, a ClubSport build AP Coilovers (I think they are an offshoot of another company?) - Mate's Passat ; I drove this to German Gaz GHAs ; My early NA MX-5 1.6.
KWs were the v3s on my now sold 944 Turbo. They were superb on the car.
FKs were on a friend's Mk2 Golf were 'very' firm ; he had the 'High Sport' versions. I'd say firmer than my E91 on Run-Flats, and that was firm. He tried raising and lowering the car etc. and it was just very hard. Potholes had you wincing down tight roads more than normal, and the M45 basically had the car bouncing down the road. It handled fine, but it was definitely on the firm side. He's now on Eibach Springs and Meyle dampers, and the car is like how he wanted it to drive. It's still a little firm but a big step up from what it was.
Billies I had on the 205 GTi, with B6 dampers on the rear. That was a lovely setup. I understand they are not quite what they were however, but I did like the drive of that GTi. It was maybe a little busy at low speeds if I am being picky, but it was spot on to drive.
BC Racing a mate had on his E36, when I drove it. That was very good. That however, had been setup and corner weighed by a very reputable firm (Spire Technologies in Warwick). That handled well, and was on the firmer side, but certainly not too uncomfortable. They were not as good as the KWv3s, but then again, they were not v3 money. It gripped brilliantly. The firmness may have been down to the car being setup for track use.
AP Racings rode terribly at the near factory height, on a B5.5 Passat PD TDI 1.9 Estate. The pre-load on the springs worked against them, and the car just got semi-coil bound on compression, meaning it was a mega firm ride. Lowering the car on them won some comfort back, but the rears would still bottom out, and the rear springs were coil bound at the ends, albeit I think that was there more for tyre location on the rear, when the dampers was in the rebound stroke. It rode nicer on Sachs shocks on the rear, and Spax rear springs
Gaz GHAs were on my MX-5. They were firmer than my mate's MX-5 on the Bilstein B6 setup. My car was low however with probably didn't help. It wasn't too firm however, and the car was good fun. It didn't bounce too much or anything. It was a good car, and with Goodyears on the 14" daisies, it really had lots of grip, and predictable slidey action if you got carried away. I suspect that if I raise the car a touch, it may have been a very good setup on that car.
