I've heard a nasty rumour that this year's event will be the last. I've done a quick search, and can't find anything official, but if it was a sneaky move by Brighton and Hove council it wouldn't surprise me at all, they've been trying to stop it for years. It's the oldest Motorsport event in the world, one weekend a year. Apparently it's due to their 'low emission zone' Now I know as a Motorsport enthusiast, and a petrolhead, I'm the antichrist, and should be beaten with tofu and a pedal cycle until I see sense, but really? Anyone else seen about this?

Heard similar but unconfirmed. Was only a matter of time considering how right on they are down there. Green MP as well. Speed trials was the only thing worth going to London-on-Sea for.

There were moves in this direction a few years back, fortunately good sense prevailed and it came to nothing. Has the old story just re-surfaced or is this a new threat I wonder?

Not sure if the threat ever went away, during the pandemic they restricted all vehicles along Madeira drive to 'encourage walking' They'd love to put paid to it, regardless of how much money it brings in, or that the local businesses mainly support it, or so I've been told. What next? London to Brighton vintage car run? Mini one, landy one?

I heard they were always one step from not happening again because the organisation was a bit all over the place.
Easier to blame the council I guess though.

The recent changes to Madiera Drive mean it was always on thin ice, the council are notoriously anti-car and it wouldn't surprise me if they did get shot of it, and the London to Brighton car runs.

I've read that it may be the last London to Brighton mini run, mabie the speed trial rumor is being confused with that? If its true and 2 iconic events are being lost to the lez that's really sad news.

It's a real shame if so. Lots of people go to these events and it's a little bit silly if they're planning on cancelling both the L2B Mini Run and the Speed Trials. I've not done the Speed Trials but I've been to the Mini Run on many occasions. Trouble is, Brighton is an absolute nightmare to drive in. If you're not on the run, you have to find somewhere to park and that usually means a very expensive stay in a car park or at a meter, or using Park and Ride. I really, REALLY hate using buses, as you have to rely on them being a) available and b) not full of people you don't want to travel with. As a breath of fresh air, not all coastal towns want to ban cars and car events. Clacton hosted a successful rally in the town and the surrounding area last year and it looks like it's back on again for this year as well. The Council recognised that having a few thousand people visiting is actually good for the town's tourism, restaurants and shops. Brighton and Hove appear to be a little short-sighted in this respect if the rumours are true. I bet the seaside shops and restaurants love it when a few thousand people turn up to watch cars as they will always spend money there. Where's that money coming from if they cancel?? People out for a stroll? Corbeau Seats Rally April 2023

It is also worthy of note that Maderia Drive's terraces are being restored, starting this year. I wonder if they will end up covered in scaffold and be potentially dangerous to be racing along next to? That video mentions reopening the middle terrace, as people love it for viewing events. There is one event in particular it is famously used for viewing. Also reading the report and photos from last year with people on track and someone almost collecting themselves on a lamp-post doesn't shine a good light on proceedings: www.theargus.co.uk/news/20899160.brighton-speed-trial-makes-dramatic-return/There is also the fact that the cars competing are getting quicker which I suspect is giving people pause for thought, they've had to cancel before due to fatalities Anyway be interesting to see if anything more concrete than internet rumours float up about this, the Brighton and Hove Motor Club pages/groups don't mention it and I'd have thought they would have been the first to have a fit about it and launch a useless online petition. b) not full of people you don't want to travel with. Having to share space with poor people is inconvenient.

I read that the mini run is stopping because of mr Kahn's measures on the ulez meaning it would have to start outside of the M25.
Personaly I think it would be better if these events didn't run out of cities, with the speedhumps, stazi like enforcement of petty rules with cameras and general congestion, something like Beaulieu to Bicester would make more sense and support the car friendly institutions.

Mini run used to start in my local park when I lived in Crystal Palace. Always seemed an odd place for it to start, the drive out from Crystal Palace to the M25 was always horrible at the best of times. Was nice to have a car show/event I could walk to from my house though

Was nice to have a car show/event I could walk to from my house though The Mini run I always liked doing was the Riviera Run. It started in 95 and went from one of the M4 services all the way down to Newquay. They changed which M4 services we met up at but I did 10 years of it and much preferred it to L2B for the very reasons mentioned: getting out of London is awful...

Assuming this is more than just a rumour (anyone got a source??) it is more likely to be due to the number of fatalities and bad press from that rather than emissions. The surface down there is not good, the safety areas non-existent and the speeds achieved are pretty spectacular.
Anyone who's actually been to Brighton will know that it is already RAMMED on a late summer weekend, so they're good for visitors and income...
My guess is it's an old rumour perpetuated by some Andrew Tate loving, Greta hating, tAkInG AwAy My LiBeRtEeEz brigade

A friend of mine has just had to close shop, that was situated in the old national coach station across the road from Brighton pier. Mainly due to the landlord increasing the rent by too much, but events like this and pride etc were big income generators for her business. Personally I don’t have fond memories of Madeira drive, having had my xr4x4 stolen from there and it being found in the early hours back in Madeira drive burning like a Belisha beacon.

Incarnation run by Ace Cafe is operating this year but are the events under threat from local council / shame as all events on Madeira Drive are well attended and local business gain by default. Times are changing sadly.

The organisers of the mini run are advertising it as the last run due to ULEZ. They have already had to move the start point last year as the owners of crystal palace decided that the event didn't align with their green ethos.

The organisers of the mini run are advertising it as the last run due to ULEZ. They have already had to move the start point last year as the owners of crystal palace decided that the event didn't align with their green ethos. I saw that. A lot of events have gone up in price. Bicester is now almost £20 a person to enter and the Stratford-Upon-Avon show has too. In some cases it’s greed, in others it’s operating costs. A mate’s electric bill was due to go up £20k a month (he works with computers). Unless he goes out of business, he has to pass that cost on. It’s a very well subscribed event. Given that Minis are no longer cheap (£8-10k for a non oversilled snotter minimum), I doubt the ULEZ charge would affect them. It would be more responsibility for the owners to sort out, yes. But I doubt it would be the showstopper thr organisers are making it out to be.
