This story starts a couple of years ago, so the first few entries will be playing a bit of catch-up… I’d owned lots of old cars, including a few fast and scary aircooled beetles. A Covin project fell into my lap, so I spent a year fettling it and working out how to make a fun street car/occasional track day car out of it. Lots of permutations of Porsche 944 rear suspension and brakes were studied, until I settled on late 944 rear arms and brakes. The front torsion beams and framehead had to go, so whilst I was working out how to adapt 928 parts, I heard about a rough fibreglass 911 replica for sale, crucially on a-arm suspension.

As I said, those pics were taken two years ago. I’ll not bore you all with all the niff naff and trivia since then, so here’s a list of what has been happening…. Not had a lot of hands on time due to life getting in the way, so mostly I have been sourcing parts. Such as… A complete coupe roof moulding, a Duck tail rear lid (will swap around with the RSR lid as and when), an RSR front bumper, roll cage, porsche 911 seats (one will be replaced by a decent bucket seat), momo d35 on a qr boss, set of mostly 1973 dials, 930 turbo brake discs on the front, 964 turbo discs on the back, 9x15 and 11x15 Fuch reps with road legal semi slicks/P7 Corsas, loads of odds and ends and useful stuff, and finally the engine. Porsche stuff is massively expensive, so I’ve got an EZ30 scooby flat six with a reversed 5 speed outback box. I’ll be changing the box when the time comes for the planned subarugears kit. The engine will be supercharged and double charge cooled… thanks Rovaru, check out his Rover 200 thread. Pics over the next day or two. 👍🏻

Forgive my fat fingers.. a couple of unwanted pics snuck in. I won’t be using the fibreglass whaletail or the Audi TT engine in the bottom pic. I’ve still got the tail if anyone wants to make a fancy coffee table out of it 😃

The front suspension is a custom A-arm wishbone set up. The uprights appear to be modified early Porsche 911 Bilstein struts They have been shortened and have been modded by fitting balljoints into the top. They will be getting completely stripped down and refreshed. They obviously incorporate the standard 911 brake mounts and steering arms too. The back suspension is again A-arm. The uprights and hub carrier have porsche centres mounted into some form of fabricated upright. It has standard porsche stub axles, handbrake cable and shoe mounts etc but have been made to accept twin rear coilovers on each side. In order to save weight I'll be changing to single coilover each side and checking the geometry of the A-arms. Both front and rear appear to be equal length arms, probably good for a slow speed grass tracker with decent ground clearance and low lateral g force expectation. I have my old text books out now to get a bit more of an idea of what the best way forward will be regarding the positioning of the A-arm pick up points and lengths. I'll be taking this beastie out on track days so a more racetrack orientated setup will be devised. The whole lot needs stripping down anyway and I have lots of spare space to move the suspension mounts around. I may even narrow the rear track by modding the chassis to get the rear wheels under the existing turbo-style arches, so can incorporate the suspension geometry changes at the same time. I think I need a beer after all that head scratching... :-) More pics shortly.
