Right - had the bearings on and off 5 times now!!
The backlash is now 0.12 which is at the lower end of acceptable but still acceptable. The mesh patterns are across the whole tooth and not near the top or bottom but they are heel - toe. That is to say the drive pattern is mostly at the toe and the coast is mostly at the heel. My guides suggest I move CW closer to the P to shift it a little bit this would decrease my backlash and it wouldn't have enough. I'm right at the lower end of backlash.
Could 40 years and about 160k on these parts mean I won't get it spot on and this is probably the closest I can get it? I'd like to call this to a close!
