So, I know this has been done and can be done, my plan is to convert my early NA to a NB VVTI Engine next year, currently I have an engine ill rebuild in the garage first.
Few questions below. What are my options/ways of doing this, am I missing anything?
VVTI Engine fitted with original wiring loom/ECU - I believe this means the VVTI wont work unless i get a chip for the ECU or an aftermarket ECU, I would also have to change some of the connectors on the MK1 Engine loom to suit?
I also have a MK2 Dash spare, I actually quite like the Mk2 Dash so tempted to swap that at the same time, if this is the case I guess best option is buying a Mk2 wiring loom and changing loom, engine and dash together - I would then need to manually wire in the pop up headlights? Anything else?
What else is worth doing at the same time? Ill be pulling the car off the road to do this, it's a weekend car so not an issue but is there anything modification wise worth doing while everything's out? I will of course do all gaskets/timing etc etc on engine before it goes in while its on an engine stand.
The more expensive option that I'm not completely against is standalone ECU and having a loom made, also future proofing if I go down the forced induction route.. not something i plan to do but who knows.
Also, i know its not really worth it power wise and forced induction makes more sense, been there, had a Turbo 5, this is almost an OEM+/Road style build that'll be a fun weekend car, nothing more, i like the idea of the VVTI engine in a MK1, I've owned a MK2.5 VVTI and the power for me was perfect, driveable and enjoyable, but lets be honest.. Mk1 is cooler! So the idea of making the best of both appeals to me.
Any feedback/opinions welcomed of course.
Some pictures of it so far, as payment Started life as an Auto, just finishing up a manual conversion at the moment ready to get it back out in spring/summer.
I'll get a proper build thread up when I'm motivated.
