Doesn't this breed of Celica have the engine with the chocolate crank?

Doesn't this breed of Celica have the engine with the chocolate crank? Isn't it piston rings like the MR2? If so, I think if it's made it this far it'll probably be OK, that seems to be the general consensus IIRC

They don't have a chocolate crank as such they just burn oil like a mofo because curse word rings/worn bores and people forget to keep them topped up so they run low on oil and seize up. Fairly common fault across many engines.

I just remember my mates MR2 knocking it's tits off and they have the same engine
I also remember seeing a lot of Celicas on eBay for sale as spares/repairs for the same issue.

If an ST220 is your thing, there is a nice one for sale on one of the Facebook groups. A few are surprised at the cost that he wants (£2k)

I picked this up yesterday for £1150, with 11 months mot, drove it from Sheffield to Leeds. Seems good fun and fairly nippy.

In some ways, I reckon they are a smarter buy over most over an MCS. Regarding HGs going, I think I know why they go. Folks probably put in the wrong coolant. These should run G48 or genuine BMW, with it changed every 3 years, 4 tops ; I've seen it hold strong for longer, but no idea how effective it was. Quite a few I saw back in the day didn't, where it had been in for a long time, with rusty water. I'd be tempted to flush it out and fill it with G48 - Halfords sell it for a reasonable sum. It, to me, is one of the better coolants, and one of the few IATs which is factory approved by BMW, and Porsche to name a few brands. Does yours have a Midlands 'box on it, or the later one?

I plan to do some fluid changes, it would make sense to change the coolant with quality stuff. Someone on the mini page also said change the engine and gearbox oils, and also do the power steering fluid. I’m not sure which gearbox it has, but I was told the 2004 models onwards came with the stronger gearbox.
I have 3 small issues to sort
The boot struts have failed and the boot drops down, already sorted that, pair of struts £20 overnight on amazon There is a small blow from the exhaust, mot sheet mentioned this as an advisory, a small leak on the front pipe There is a screw in the corner of the glovebox jamming it shut, apparently the catch is prone to failure

Heat buildup is the most common cause of power steering pump failure. It is a major issue that has become synonymous with Minis. Poor design and location doomed the design from the beginning. The pump sits below the exhaust manifold, close to the road.

On the Aprilia bike I used to own, the exhaust ran up and around the rear shock, causing it to overheat and the damping to go off, how do designers miss things like that?

I’m not sure which gearbox it has, but I was told the 2004 models onwards came with the stronger gearbox. It is a pre facelift 52 plate so it’ll have the midlands box in it. The odd thing is I think it is more or less the same box as fitted to the rover 200/25’s and they didn’t seem to suffer failures as much. Possibly down to the rover being an oap’s car and the mini reaching a younger target audience so being driven a bit more aggressively. I believe it is the main input shaft bearing that goes on them. General consensus is to get the box stripped and the bearings replaced as opposed to chancing it with a used box. I think the getrag box can be swapped instead but requires the drives shafts etc to be changed as well. We bought our son a 55 plate mini one 7 special edition for his 18th. He is now nearly 24 so had it a few years. The getrag box has been fine, but his girlfriend had a 51 plate with the midland box and that failed so she got rid.

The OEM coolant for your car is G48. You can get this from Halfords as well as BMW.
It's a little pricier than the normal stuff, but IME, it's about the best IAT coolant you can buy. The additives seem to last a hell of alot longer than the 'normal' IAT coolants.
