It is big, it is long. And yes, I have more stuff than would keep a small country busy for weeks…… The guy who brought the Micra has declined as his rig is not big enough, but I think he prefers quick, local jobs. Paul Y suggested I buy and drive it to an MOT station locally……. Where I live. Does insurance cover you driving to an MOT station? I am very risk-averse at the best of times. So have to consider looking at the alternative, which is recovery. SIZE……….. MOT Fail sheet.Again, seems reasonably driveable, but maybe the law would not be impressed. Thank you for the advice and laughing.

Driving to your local mot station is ok in theory if you’re just going across town to it , but might take some explaining if you’ve traveled 40 miles & passed 15 other mot stations to get there .

There is no distance law in the "drive to MOT" rules, not even a "within reasonable distance" or some such, so in theory it would be fine. However it is illegal to drive a unsafe vehicle on the roads, and if they police stop you and have it about them to check the vehicle over some of those fails would be very easy to spot.
I've done it, several times, over similar distances and got away with it. They were cars that had run out of MOT though, not ones that had failed.
It'd probably be worth looking up the relevant penalties and fines first, plus £300 + £15 a day if it gets seized + still having to pay somebody to move it.

I wouldn't drive it unless you've done some work to it at least all the obvious stuff that can be easily seen at the side of the road. MOT can be anywhere there no maximum distance you can travel. I've been stopped once and they wanted to know why I was going so far - saying it was because I trusted that MOT station and I had access to a full workshop there for any repairs that need doing satisfied them.
I make it about 2t (ISH), so it's ok on a trailer behind a transit etc but not on a 3.5t recovery.
Where's it coming from?

Since that car has a dangerous MOT failure, I think the fine is around £2k, as essentially, the car is not meant to be on the road at all.

Even driving to a prebooked MOT, you would be driving it with known defects which carries a bit of a whack if stopped. That and it literally says no rear brakes as one of the RFR's, all leads me to saying it's a silly idea to want to drive that that distance.

Put the details into Shipley, won't cost you owt. I'm getting a fourtrak delivered from 150 miles away for £230. I reckon even if I could hire a truck, that, diesel + 2 Dartford crossings would not be far off that, plus I'd need a day off work and the hassle of it. The quotes started at about £360, but kept coming in lower over the next few days. You might get lucky and have someone going one way needing a load coming back.
Also MOT exempt and I did briefly consider getting a train down and driving it back to an MOT appointment, but it's still a day and £100 on the train + £50 diesel, plus anpr cameras everywhere and the hassle / grief. Not worth it.

As another option, how much would it cost to have it repaired and MOT'ed at the place it failed and then you could get a train and drive it back.
Depending on the parts required and their cost it might not be a huge difference between paying a garage to repair or paying a transport firm to move it and then getting it back home, buying the parts, fixing it yourself and then MOTing it.
Just a thought as the cost of moving something can be quite high, especially if its big/heavy and can't be moved on a standrd 3.5T truck. Many years ago I bought a Jaguar 420 (not 420G) and I had a devil of a time getting someone to move it as it was just a bit bigger and heavier than a MK2 making it slightly over what a lot of people could/would move. One firm actually went to collect it and when they saw it refused and came back empty. I ended up paying twice what I was originally quoted to get it moved.

Thanks all.
Looks like it is on to Plan B then.
See if I can find a return/shared load to save a bit of cash.
Rape the piggy bank and pray it is good enough.

I've found Shipley to be very good for long distance pickups. Would atleast give you go idea on price.
Managed to get some cars picked up and delivered for less than I would cost me in fuel to do it myself. All depends if they can find a back load

It may be worth reaching out to E M Rogers, or a similar company. For single cars, they'll be very pricey. If they can combine the load, it can bring the costs down significantly

Have decided after 48 hours of research to walk away from this one.
I have enough to keep my busy through winter, and despite having liked these an unhealthy amount over the years, I do not need another 5.0 liter V8 on my drive.
Thank you as always for the input and advice on here.
This collective certainly rocks.

Was it a hearse or flower car?

Was it a hearse or flower car? Dark blue. Badly satin blacked. I have always, ever since joining this forum a long time ago seen satin or matt black as funeral colours, added just before a car heads to the motorway in the Chinese sky/SMEG fridge factory via the crusher. I would rather have damaged paint than a rubbish blow over. So no, not a flower car or hearse, but was used by someone who ran a limo company in Essex as a parts chaser and functional tool according to the seller who does not seem or at least admit to knowing much about its past. He has had it 4-5 years it seems. MOT History indicates age, and disregard for wear items.

WTF? How on earth are you walking away from a Caprice wagon Rian? Get a hold of yourself man... get it done! This was the actual car that got me wanting one of these when I visited Clem in Arkansas in 2016 Sure it is a lot nicer. But to me, as an aspiring redneck…. Heavenly.

i reckon you could do it for free. Hows about travelling to it, then makign it a non runner, and then call the AA / RAC assuming you have it, and tell them to take it home. Could cost you a one way bus ticket and assuming yu have some kind of breakdown service.
