I was having a chat with my one lodger tonight about importing cars from the 🇺🇸
He mentioned some prices for bringing a container into the UK.
I found his information a tad doubtful.
So, for those who have a real time idea of what it would cost to bring in and land a car or truck, lets say late 60’s Mustang or 70’s Chevy/Ford short wheelbase truck to one of the UK ports……
Landed, shipping costs.
Post away please.
Not bothered about the taxes and duties.

I spoke to guy last year who imports bathroom products via shipping containers. He was saying that the price had risen from £1300 in 2019 to £16000 by August 2021.
A far cry from the export price of £675 to export a car the other way in 2002.
Not totally relevant, but not irrelevant either.

Thats what I was wondering, what a car would cost me to land here from either coast in the USA.
I know the prices differ, but one needs to add that to your calculations.

I see these guys mentioned a lot in the VW circles I am in and they get good reviews. They often advertise cars inc shipping costs on the social media pages and you can see the original UK advert to work on out shipping prices. www.openairimports.com/

Cost me 1600 quid to have a car picked up, stored a week or two, shoved in a container with another, shipped from Houston, including insurance for full value.
Another few hundred quid to have it unloaded.
Also covered sorting the paperwork with customs leaving USA, and arriving in the UK, so all I had to do was pay Customs and Excise a large amount of money and then go pick it up.
Wasn't the cheapest at the time, but was with a company with a good reputation - car arrived undamaged, complete with stuff left in the boot - that's not always the case when you start researching companies. Very hassle free experience.
I would imagine costs have gone up rather lot since then, as all freight costs have risen.
(I bought a two year old car from Carmax, a big second hand car dealer network in the USA - not the cheapest way, but its a fixed price - if you don't like the price, don't buy. Probably the easiest, nicest, quickest way I've gone from handing over cash to having the title (registration) in my hand of any car I've ever bought, including in the UK).

Did you manage to get any current prices? 6 months should be long enough to sort Vermont title..

I heard on the radio this week that container prices are tumbling from their Covid highs, how far I don't know. I have a friend who exports a lot to the US (antique furniture mainly) who reckons boxes across the Atlantic have been at a premium for years as China wants empties so that is where they go. Real world figures for a box from there to here? I have no idea but am intrigued if anyone knows. There is always plenty of roro on the docks at Liverpool, mainly Range Rovers out, and Airstream caravans, CAT equipment and the like being landed.

China wants containers, as when the workforce empties them, they live in them apparently.
