As title. I'm on the quest for a new toy, and I'm not fully sure what I'm after. One thing that has crossed my mind is a zetec swapped MK2 escort (I know not exactly reinventing the wheel). Now due to budget it will more than likely have to be a rough 4 door. An that's fine, a blank canvas if you will.
But... I'm not a ford man, certainly not a 40 year old 4 man. The mechanical bits don't bother me as spanners work the same on everything. But what about rot. I know they rust. I know there getting on.. but we're are the horror spots (don't say between the number plates haha). Basically as a ford "newbie" what areas are prone to it you wouldn't normally look. What areas are proper problem jobs if rusty, where should I be looking.
Thanks in advance
Mat

They're not *that bad for rotting really. Floor pans, bottom of the a-pillars, sills/jacking points, boot floor (spare wheel well / under the gas tank), strut tops. Can buy literally everything for them, which is either helpful or boring, depending on your viewpoint prices can be eyewatering though, as you're no doubt well aware. I've had a few (first 4 cars were Mk2's, sold my Mk1 van as part of the Lincoln fundraising project) and doubt I'd be able to justify the price of them if I didn't already have one. Good luck, let us know how you get on!

My bro has a MK2 RS2000 & a mate has a MK2 1300 base model .
Both in different stages of repair .
The RS has had a very tough life , multiple bad repairs found so far & is turning into a massive job . He’s found remains of Yellow, Red & White panels just in the O/S/F inner wing .
My bro has owned the RS for around 15 years , he won’t add up how much it’s cost so far .
The 1300 is a one owner from new vehicle , think just the panel cost is upto £2.5k .
Both looked semi ok before they started . Both have seemed to rot in totally opposite positions .
The 1300 seems to be mainly the chassis rails/floor/sills . The RS is mainly inner wings/bulkhead/sills/roof .
You really need to go with eyes wide open & check every millimetre of it .
Good luck , I still have fond memories of mine .
👍

Front scuttle, top of firewall (not sure of the actual name) internally is very common. Standard test is give the dash a bang and watch the rust fall from behind it. I had a , i think 1980 V plate?,Mk2 two door 1300GL in about 1990, it leaked from the corrosion there but sold it for £350 with an MOT...........

Good luck, let us know how you get on! Yeah it's the off the shelf stuff that sort of appeals. Yeah it will be "just" another MK2 but I'm sure I could make it my own. The prices seem to vary wildly and go from the insane to the absolutely ridiculous (and mk1s seem to be different level). I'm sure there will be a build thread for whatever bad decision I make

But wanted to be forewarned and forearmed sort of thing. Cheers

That's good (or bad depends how you look at it) to know. I'm guessing that's one of them places that will be a pig of a repair too. So will definitely inspect it there Cheers

As a bit of background the car I'm eyeing up is a Portuguese import. Never been registered never seen salt on British roads. However it will undoubtedly have seen some low rate "repairs" to keep it on the road over there. But my hope is it should be "relatively" solid.
I'm not doing owt til kit car goes but that ends on eBay tomorrow night. And will sell (assuming winning bidder isn't a Pillock)
Cheers

Do you want another car that will swallow loads of time and money and might be off the road more than on it?
I'm just thinking how you seemed so happy with the tiger in that you could just drive it compared to the lexus.
But, I love you and will support you whatever car you buy.

That's the thing I think I miss messing as much as I miss driving something properly cool... I need summat to tinker with always have done or my head goes to pieces. Before the cars it was race bikes, before the race bikes it was cars before then it was RC/cars planes, even my moped had a 70cc race engine n all the trimmings 😂. The tiger was mega in that it just worked. But it didn't inspire me, and I miss taking the kids out in summat on a weekend. Th only other option is summat modern ish. But I feel it would be too much just like a car.. Cheers for the kind words tho!

I totally get that. It took me a few cars to realise I get bored once I've "completed" them.
I've just bought a lupo with a 1.8 turbo engine that is 110% completed, proper brakes, suspension, poly bushed, interior retrimmed and has a mega sound system, everything.
All I've done so far is service it, doesn't need anything else doing.
Am I bored, maybe.

Hopefully you’ll get lucky buying something that hasn’t seen road salt .

Same as a Mk1, anything except the glass and the tyres, and even the wire in tyres can rust if the car is feeling spiteful! (and I had a window with grinder spatter, so the glass can rust too!)

The Retro power guys are doing a pair of Mk1's (effectively the same under the skin) at the moment. They have a lot of information on the rot areas and how they deal with them. Also a bit on aftermarket panel fit.

The Mk1 Escort series starts here You will have to sieve through all the other stuff if you are not interested. Channel link is www.youtube.com/user/retropowercars/videosTheir solution to the heater box rot is pretty good.

The problem with RWD Escorts is because they're so valuable they're also a big attraction for con men/bodger's/dodgy dealers. We're currently helping a guy out going through small claims court as the "mint" 20 grand MK2 he bought from a trusted Ford scene person isn't, and not only that it's also not got half the bits it was advertised as having.

I get what you mean, but luckily for me the end of the market I can afford probably isn't very appealling to crooks 🤣.. definitely eyes wide open when I go to view it tho Cheers
