Morning all. Found amongst my late grandads stuff. I've absolutely no idea what this is, and so far neither has anyone else who's seen it Teaspoon for scale, it's approximately 12cm x 12cm, solid brass, fairly heavy and extremely well made. There's zero backlash on the vertical movement, and very little on the horizontal. I'm thinking it's some kind of sighting measurement or adjustment, but even a tank museum who've seen it couldn't relate it to anything they knew. It's been suggested that it's aircraft, but I think it's too heavy. Bit of background - my grandad was an old-school engineer, and although he'd have had the skill to make this he wouldn't have had the equipment. He served in the engine room of a minesweeper off the east coast during the first world war, and head of maintenance for st.albans city hospital during the second. Anyone got any ideas? TIA Mods- please remove if you feel it's not relevant

It's a setting tool for something, and there will be one person in the world who's got the something that doesn't quite work correctly as they can't set it properly

I've asked around and there is an idea it could be a fuse setter. Considering the method it's something that you would want to set only once but have the option to change. Considering your Grandfather's war service it could be for depth charges or mines. A naval museum or similar forum may lead to other ideas.

Someone has just contacted me to say that if it was WW1 or 2 it would be stamped with the broad arrow so probably not naval.

What units are the graduations/divisions? Metric? Or just ‘units’? Wondering if it is a profile measuring tool of some description or a setting tool ie do you put it in place first and then adjust, or set first and then put it in place?

Can You turn those two wheels a good amount to show in a new pic what parts move and how much so one can get an idea of the possible purpose?

Thanks for replying all Dorset_Clive, I put a tape measure next to it, units seem to be just that, but it must be quite old, even if its origins aren't war, I would expect it to be imperial, or degrees? braaap, pics of it extended, the vertical movement takes the'hook' with it, which has 2 holes in it, the vertical movement actually hits its adjustment wheel wound right back

Looking closely it looks like 10 units = 5mm…ie 2:1…I wonder if it is for measuring/setting a radius to give a diameter?
If you’re happy I could share around some ex-mil mates who might have a guess?

Share away Dorset_Clive, although as already said the Norfolk Tank Museum, and Frankenhealey's contacts didn't think so. Having said that, any ideas are welcome 👍
