Strangely unloved, basically a 4 door manta if internetland is to be believed.
I think they are cool too, I'm tempted every time I see one. Mind you, if they rust like mantas it may be less rosy.

It's because it's a 1300. A 1256cc Viva engine in a Cavalier will not be fast!
Parts are great for these as many parts fit from the Manta & Carlton. 2200 injection + 5-speed is bolt in stuff. The Mk1 Cavalier Coupe' is a very stylish vehicle.
Do me a favour though, don't buy a Vauxhall Cavalier and change all the trim to Manta stuff, (pet hate No. 124) Just buy an Opel Manta instead!

I like them. There I've said it. A cousin of mine had a white four door with red interior. That would be cool now.
If you take the badges off, just leave them off in my book. I prefer not to let anyone know what something is, besides, badges and trim just catch the sponge when you're washing it ;D

I wouldn't! I know this is a modified classics forum but I sit fairly firmly at the 'little to no mods end of the scale', although I do appreciate cheap rat look and mechanical mods to bring classics up to practical standards (how did I make that sound so boring?) Someone should have this, T&T for less than 400 smackers! All it needs is a sheepskin seat cover and a whack with the stick! ;D www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C28779

Anyone read the article about one in Practical Classics last month?

They look great to me, just a bigger better looking chevette imo.
Leave the body standard and drop on suitably dished wheels. Who was it on here that had a very low red one with rostyles?

One has recently appeared on a driveway near my house, reminding me how long it was since I last had one (a sportshatch, with a duff carb. 15mpg!!) Even the 4 door manages to look nice (if you like 70's GM styling), and its a total oddball compared to modern stuff. Win, I'd say.
You are right about the rust tho, check everywhere!!

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

I turned down a tidy one owner low miles (50K ish) 1600L Mk1 a few years ago. It was red with a red interior and I think it still had some MOT or had simply expired. Old guy giving up driving. Then the scrappy charged him £25 to take it away. At the time even buffed up to the nines I couldn't see me getting more than £150 for it so I let it go get cubed. The benefit of hindsight eh? There was also a 2 door saloon and the 3 door Sportshatch. The 2 door saloon is not the same as the Manta 2 door. The 3 door hatch is the same as a Manta. AFAIK there was never a Cavalier 2 door Coupe. Engiones were 1256 OHV, 1600 CIH and IIRC a 1.9 CIH too. Few and far between, possibly only as a GLS too. Fast Car Magazine had one as a project car back in the early 90s.

Mt grandad had one from new - it was an MOT failure with rot at 3 years old ;D I loved it though. It stayed in my mind as I once almost fell out when I opened a rear door at speed, aged about 3 He was a Vauxhall man through and through and had most sorts, but the Cav was my favourite.

I am thinking about getting one of the coupes instead of a Capri, just due to them being cheaper.

Alistair, the shame! Bodies were 2 door saloon, 4 door saloon, 2 door coupe' & 2 door hatchback. Engines were 1256 ohv, 1600 cih, 1900 cih, & 2000 cih. Early models had the 1900 as the big engine, later went to the 2000. As I said, the Carlton 2200i is the same motor , as is the 2.4 Frontera lump. Don't forget the Opel Ascona. 2 & 4 door Cavalier saloons are same as Ascona except for front end, whereas Cavalier Coupe & Sportshatch are same as Manta (but without holes in front panel). 2 door saloons are the rarest as not many were sold (may as well have had a Chevette!) 4 door saloons the most unloved. On a personal level, I never like the look of the hatchback much, but loved the lines of the Coupe'. I say be different, get the 4 door! Oh, and I have a lovely set of Rostyles for these for sale!

I had a 4 door saloon in 1987....1600 cih engine with weber 32/32 dgav, kent fast road cam, ashley comp exhaust and 1.9 big valve head.It was still the slowest thing evAr! It ended up with a ful manta bodykit on it including side skirts modified for the four door and an Ascona 400 boot spoiler (well it was the 80's!) Ascona much nicer looking imho
I used to crave for the coupe too,a real nice looking car.I remember the mattig extreme fast car project very well.....how i used to dribble over that!

Grown ups Chevette, no idea why they have not got balooned price tags like other retro kit, unless its the reliability and rust rumours of old Vaux's. I reckon a cool capable car could be built/restored out of one.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Meh, its an Opel not a real Vauxhall, hense I'm sketchy on the details. My excuse and I'm sticking to it.
Old Vauxhalls are always about 50% of the price of the equivalent old Ford.
