If I want to add an amp to my current car stereo - which is an old Panasonic head unit and some Vibe speakers - do I need to use a stand alone aftermarket amp, like Alpine or other brands - or can I use a used one from a car that had a complete system? Can I get a used ebay amp from say, a 2005 Lexus or a 2010 BMW? Or are these only compatible with their own systems?
Just starting to get my head round all the car stereo stuff. If the answer is 'No, you can't use a Lexus amp', what are some good value aftermarket amps? Thanks.

In the course of further research I came across this thread. The answer seems to be 'Yes, you can, but it's a lot of work and not worth the effort'. I think I'll just look out for a deal on an aftermarket amp. forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=720874

Unless the Panasonic has line out sockets, the amp you buy will need to have high level inputs to accept the signal from the head units speaker wires. Just something to look out for!

Also, lots of OEM amps have various dsp settings preprogrammed, which will probably adversely affect sound in a different car.
For instance, a lot of systems change EQ as the car goes faster and gets noisier to protect cheap OEM speakers
