For best effect, my missus would be in the car and the dog and I would be in bed!
She's more of a fighter than I am, and she'd be really mean if she was cold from being out there all night!

Claymore under the drivers seat with pull wire attached to the door so you know to open and unclip before opening to get full access? What do you mean ' A bit excessive' A Claymore might be difficult to justify unless you move to Texas but a Krank alarm mine with a blank shotgun cartridge is perfectly legal to own and use here in the UK. No problem buying blanks either. For maximum effect black powder ones if you can get them. www.henrykrank.com/alarm-mine-h4990/You absolutely should not carelessly put down a box spanner with a spark plug in right over the top of the blank.

Black powder is fairly simple to make. My youngest has done it several times.

And yet any high school chemistry student can make it. I would have thought a firearms licence would be required for legal possession of gun powder.

I would have thought a firearms licence would be required for legal possession of gun powder. You can quite legally buy fireworks in the UK, no licence needed

Black is not a colour ! .... Its the absence of colour

There is a small difference between buying commercially produced fireworks and buying rifle powder. Here in NZ only firearms licence holders may legally possess ammunition but the sale of fireworks to the general public is legal on certain days of the year (Guy Fawkes season).

Here in NZ only firearms licence holders may legally possess ammunition but the sale of fireworks to the general public is legal on certain days of the year (Guy Fawkes season). You can legally own/ buy blanks here, but possession of live ammunition without a fire arms certificate/ shotgun certificate is an absolute offense (IE there no arguing a case you are just guilty). Black powder is in a wierd limbo area, hand guns are basically illegal here except for black powder - would love a cap and ball colt and enough land of my own to use it. Everybody just buys enough fireworks in NZ on guy Fawkes night for the rest of the year! And yet any high school chemistry student can make it. I would have thought a firearms licence would be required for legal possession of gun powder. We certainly made our own, though it was more use as a smoke screen than things that go bang.

If you’re waiting til they’re in the car before ‘they’ encounter any form of deterrent, you’ve already lost. Diskloks are no deterrent, pedal locks are better but their effectiveness is very vehicle specific, and they’re useless if they’re using a recovery truck or even a hi-ab as many seem to these days. Normal people think old cars on trucks is perfectly normal and pay no attention to people loading them up at all.
Same with trackers, they’re not a security device if someone else already has your car. Put it in a container and they don’t work.
Such things should be at least a third or fourth line of defence. I’m always astounded when people park desirable older cars with rudimentary factory security on their driveways in full view with nothing more than a disclok, or often not even that.
The basics should always be keep it hidden, and just make it hassle to try- more than one gate, more than one door, tight spaces you can’t get a truck into or winch things through. Make it so someone else is an easier target. Dogs are good, it’s amazing how scared people are of dogs, even little ones. but they’re not as good as geese. Seriously!
By hidden I don’t mean a car cover, they attract attention not deflect it. I mean solid gates and garage doors. No line of sight from the road is good. All my buildings are deliberately placed so the doors don’t face the road so you can’t see in even if the gate is open. Autoclose gates so they’re open for a minimum amount of time and no one can forget to shut them. I’m genuinely shocked at the amount of owners of very nickable vehicles who have a driveway with no gates, or gates that don’t lock, or you can see straight through or are so low they’re useless. But not just a driveway gate- a driveway gate AND a garage or parking bollard. The more steps they have to go through the longer it takes them. Parking at 90 degrees to the drive so there isn’t a straight run with a truck, or you have to remove a steering lock to get it out. All little things on their own that soon add up to make them go elsewhere…
I could go on about types of garage door too, and how up and overs must have been designed by a burglar. But then none of you would sleep at night 😂

The last thing- insurance. Simple rule is of you can’t afford to loose it it should be insured at all times. Yeah insurance companies are shysters but If something does happen (and I don’t just mean theft) you stand a good chance of getting most of its value back, if you’re tenacious enough. Make sure you cover is for full market value. Keep your valuations updated. Make sure your security measures meet any insurance criteria. Again I see people make absolutely insane decisions about not insuring stuff cos it ‘won’t happen to them’. Until it does. Once your car hits a certain value, cover is typically only about 1-2% of value. Who in their right mind would not pay that, especially as their car is probably appreciating in value at about the same rate? After the things I’ve had happen over the years I certainly sleep better knowing if some other bizarre event happens I’ve got some sort of legal recompense, even if I’ll have to argue the toss over it a bit.

I always thought a removable steering wheel boss and hidden battery cut off switch are never a bad idea.
