On my Volvo, went this morning to put new pads and disks on. In all the brakes I have done before, there have been many, I have never has this, one side has snapped, I have cut the other side which is also stuck solid. The longer pieces I have tried penetrating fluid and mole grips, wiggling and pulling, nothing, added heat, still nothing, I can get to the back as Volvo drilled right through, got a slim nail with the point cut off in at the back, no room though to hit it. Tried to get them completely flush to drill, not easy as they are in little indents, pretty sure they are stainless so will be tough to drill.

Heat it up as much as you dare, then squirt a bit of fresh engine oil on the spring end. Then try and wriggle the blighter out of the caliper

I think to effectively use heat on something like that you'll have to heat it for a long time to get the heat right through it. 5 minutes with a propane torch on either lobe.
If you had a tap & dye set you cut a few threads in the back side of the hole, drop in some short length of something and then tighten a bolt into the hole to force the ends out.
Perhaps something which might have contributed to the issue is that often these holes aren't straight. They're angled so the spring grips. If you're trying to pull straight up you're probably fighting the system that's designed to keep the spring from falling out.

Thanks guys, they have had plenty of heat and penetrating spray, nothing doing, even with Olympic quality wiggling. Not enough room to use a tap and dye set, I had thought of that. Ordered a punch set to collect in the morning, fingers crossed. Thanks again 👍

Right hand caliper saved and sorted, 10 minutes of blow torch and new punch set.😁 Left hand caliper to be replaced, not a chance, punch snapped inside.😢

A suggestion for the future when you have this sort of thing - put a nail, pin or a better a ground end of a snapped drill bit of slightly smaller diameter in a hammer drill with plenty of lube to lower the friction. The rapid percussive shocks do a pretty good job of removing stuck pins and the like.

I shall remember that, thanks, done brakes countless times and never had stuck springs, least I have 95% of a new punch set out of it 😄
