I’m going to fit an MX5 engine and box into my Somerset and want to keep the standard Mazda fuel injection and ecu. I know thousands of MX5 engines have been fitted into all sorts of cars over the years and I’m hoping someone has an idiots guide to wiring them up. Any info much appreciated

If you have the complete MX5 to take things from I doubt you'll have an issue.
What requires specialist knowledge is buying individual items on eBay to try and build a loom and fuel injection system from just the parts you know about. There might be gaps if you can't actually see how the system was implemented in practice. Things like one-way valves you didn't know about which stop the car stalling at a junction or whatever... that kind of thing...
But if you have the complete MX5 just go on the basis that if it was connected on the MX5 it's probably required to make the engine run well so transfer it over to the Austin.

Did the MX5 conversion on my MGB some years ago. If the donor car is an early model (NA) then the amount of wires will be less than that of an NBFL for example. In my case I transferred the whole loom into the MGB (to which I have redone a couple of weeks ago, because I have no idea why I put the headlamp wiring in :-) ). Bare in mind if you use an NB or NBFL then take the ignition ring wiring etc with you and the key. Most just tape the old key to the ring to get around the factory security. Without these you will need a paired ECU and key from a breakers etc, the NA models didnt have this feature only aftermarket security that can be cut out. As for wiring itself, I advise you download your cars diagram from here (helped me a lot!). www.miataforumz.com/how-40/mazda-miata-wiring-diagrams-1990-2002-a-497/

As others have said, should be pretty straightforward but does depend on which engine yours going for. To go with what nathan has posted, here is a list of some of the files I have if you need anything.

I’ve just done the mx5 into MGB as well.
I put the donor engine on floor and the fuel tank and had it running on the floor with complete loom. Then removed all the unnecessary stuff. Not that hard.
As previously though use an mk1 preferably without immobiliser.

Thanks info and tips I do have a complete MX5 and I’m going to remove the complete loom and use as much as possible in the Somerset as that needs rewiring anyway
