I've seen a few mentions of Lister D's on here mostly by mr frankenhealy but I've not seen anything of any depth so I thought I should put mine on here!! Everyone loves a stationary engine don't they ? Turns out not , but I do and I'm sure one or two others might be interested . I've been going to steam rallies for years and I've always been drawn to the stationary engines....the noise they make and the smell......love it . The farm where I've kept my VW's for years has had a Lister D in an old barn forever and I've had my eye on it forever but this year after going to a show ( Ducklington _west OX steam) I made the call and scored it . My pal now owns and runs the farm and typically for a farmer ,he doesn't have any sentiment for old rusty curse word on the farm and my wife went on holiday for 2 weeks ..... so it was the perfect timing . I had to uncover it from loads of rubbish but here she is !! in her natural habitat: more to come ....

yeah , it's cool isn't it . Original too I think .There's green paint under all the oil and dust. It's a bit wormy in places though and a couple of the wheels are cracked through. I don't know what it was used for unfortunately , all the old boys from the farm are dead and I've not seen another with the same trolley setup .It sort of has 2 positions for things either side of the pulleys ,each with 4 big bolts ...someone suggested a twin shearing outfit which could be right .... From what I can find its build date is may 1948 and I believe it's been on the same farm (my pals family farm) from new which is quite cool.

These lister D's are dead cheap to buy ,even fully restored ...couple of hundred quid ..but that didn't seem like the proper way to go if I wanted to live the dream ( ) and show it at a rally .I needed to pay my dues and get an original farm found non runner and get it going so there something to put on the little plaque next to it at the rallys . and the Lister D is sort of the entry level stationary engine before you get into the Petters and such like .... like a gateway engine which leads onto the hardstuff . Anyway , it was a curse word to get back to my house , it's flipping heavy and one of the wheels was seized. luckily on the farm was a chap with a trailer and a little crane so he got it to my house for a couple of pints (farm currency!) It looked in a right state but it was all there, it turned over but with no compression and a rust grinding noise . I don't think the fellas on the farm ever though it could run...not sure I did . it's been in a damp ish shed for 50 years, out of the weather but an open door, enough and get it damp and rust all the paint off.

It’s probably the valves that are stuck open, try to get some oil or diesel in to free them off. I had four Lister D’s till recently and realised I will never get around to doing anything with them. I sold three for spares/repair and kept the runner. Good luck with it. Norman

Couple of closer pics of oily rusty the state. At this point I had to get it off the trolley so I could fit it in my garage, I clamped it to my hydraulic lifting table thing . she's 1.5 hp @700rpm a ripper!!! the DH mean it's a Lister D type and hopper cooled, as opposed to radiator cooled. The serial number suggests May 1948 which is about mid table date wise ,they ran from 26 to 65 (according to the internet!). it has the later type magneto (chain driven). I don't it's run in about 50 years ....

I have no interest in owning a stationary engine but love the threads and information on them, Totally agree with your mantra of building / restoring one rather than just buying one that someone else has had the "pleasure" doing such, Looking forward to seeing future updates on this thread and bookmarked, Nigel

Are there any modern generators could be used with one of these to power the essentials in the house?
Yes you can get hondas to di the job but wheres the fun in that?

The difficulty with using it as a generator is controlling the engine automatically to maintain the correct speed to produce 50hZ (alternator running at 1500rpm) and make sure you have a voltage in tollerance.
It could be done but you have to be careful that if it goes wrong you could end up damaging some of the electronics in your house.

When you see them generating at shows they all seem to be feeding a short string of low voltage/low wattage bulbs off a dynamo. I don't think the 1.5 - 2.5hp at 700 rpm is going to give you much usable power. A Lister domestic pump was meant to be used with them I had a cunning plan for mine to replace the arthritic Villiers Mk 10 on this to drive this but the Lister is just too heavy and I need to bash the brush up at Farkham Hall this winter and it needs to be reliable so I will end up using this YAY! Another Retro Rides restomod

I've been looking at these for years and didn't realized how big and heavy they are till I went to get mine .They look small at he shows . From what I've read they're nearly 300 lb's !!!

I don't think the 1.5 - 2.5hp at 700 rpm is going to give you much usable power. 2hp would be around 1.5kW and you could increase the speed of the generator with the pulley size to get it to 50hZbut regulating for load is the problem, the string of lights you mention will be the old incandesant lamps (bulbs) and won't be very sensitive to voltage or frequency changes. They are probably old 110v building site lights being yellow.

Speed for 50hz will depend on the number of poles in the generator, an 8 pole generator (3ph) would give you 50hz at around 750rpm.

Here's what was lurking under the rocker cover : I think I'd already smashed it with the WD40 by that point. An Yes Norman was right , the exhaust Valve was stuck open .You can just about make it out in the epic's , the pushrod was as loose as a goose.

I've had an interested in stationery engines for a while as a couple of friends have them, but I can't see myself owning one. Couldn't you run a couple of alternators off them charging a bank of batteries with an inverter? No phase regulation issues then. Dan

Yep, I'm in. Any stationary engine stuff is right up my alley. I have a Villiers Mk20 in bits in the shed. It ran a few years ago. It will run again. I got it as part of a pay rise with an 88 Escort back in 1991, who needs cash.

More pics. So I started giving it a bit of a clean up . Years of caked on oil and dirt. and an upside-down inspection plate ... under all the filth in was alright...all the paint is gone but No freeze cracks or super bad rust though.
