n So i've owned this for 2 years and after watching too many You Tube videos to add a turbo to the barra 6. After keeping an eye out on all the usual places i found someone selling a complete turbo kit off a BA XR6 turbo for $1100 AUD Gave all the parts i picked up a good clean. Stripped and painted the flaking crossover pipe. I was still missing some parts. I found some rough steering rack heatshields on gumtree Will redo them in something more durable then the factory fibre board type material. Complete factory turbo exhaust from facebook marketplace Turbo coil cover to allow crossover pipe to bolt down. Bov to replace the missing one. and fitted to the crossover pipe Turbosmart wastegate actuator Turbo inlet manifold (no variable length butterflys) Gave it a clean Came up ok Time to make this more interesting Redone heatshields on including one for the engine mount. Horn Relocated Turbo oil drain fitted to sump Front removed to allow access TBC

Funnily enough the new stiff shifters the undertakers next door to work have bought are Barra powered. I knew they were big but didn't realise quite how big, they make a Jag 6 look small.

Righto next up exhaust manifold off fan and radiator out N/A Exhaust removed. Changing the intake manifold over was a horrid job. Difficult access and the loom runs through it. Ended up having to unbolt the A/C compressor too as the loom ran behind it and trapped some of the connectors. Once the intake was done after many curse words cam cover removed for a spruce up and new gaskets. plugs replaced at the same time. Rear one is an ar*e with the cover on as the firewall is above it. Turbo Map sensor fitted Decided to upgrade the intercooler from the factory XR6 Turbo to the larger FPV Typhoon cooler. I could have ran a larger aftermarket one but wanted to keep it looking as factory as possible. Messed about cleaning it and straightening fins. Looks not too bad, not that you see much anyway. Cooler bolted up Turbo Oil feed lines fitted Turbo water feed and return connectors fitted. Turbo and dump pipe bolted to manifold on bench. Access is poor if you do it on the car. Studs fitted for exhaust manifold Turbo and heat shields on Airbox , Crossover and turbo piping fitted. Intercooler connected Transmission cooler relocated and refitted. TBC

That looks really neat . How much extra power do you think you’ll gain ?? I'm going to keep the boost low around 6 or 7 psi it's got standard injectors so it will go to what the tuner thinks is safe. Should make 100hp more than it did and a good chunk of torque.

So Went to fit the cat section annnd it doesnt fit. Not suprising really as its off a BA with a 4 speed BTR auto and this is a BF with a 6 speed ZF. It was hard up against the box N/A cat alongside Turbo cat. Couldn't find a factory BF turbo cat at short notice and a new one is 720 pounds so aftermaket it is. Much better at 400 pounds and 100 cell will flow much better. Wrapped the downpipe part Bolted it up with the rear section. Backbox was a nightmare to get over rear cradle. Turbosmart boost controller fitted. Fuel pump replaced with a Walbro 255 LPH & turbo regulator on fuel rail. Bumper back from Panelbeaters it had loads of stone chips. Grills and new foglights fitted. Back on the car along with new light units. Scored a factory under headlight cold air intake and larger snorkel from FB marketplace. Job Done. Off to be tuned. Results of about 24hrs labour. Thats it for now.

That should get out of its own way well. What were the standard numbers ? Tidy install, do you need an inspection to insure or anything? James
Ps burnout video or we don’t believe the graph !

Sweet build, I’m really keen on doing this same thing so glad to see someone else do it first. Who did you get it tuned by? How’d they think it would hold up? I’m worried about boosting the bf na Barra due to the higher compression. I’d consider a thicker head gasket w/head studs if I were to do it. Looks clean and worth the effort.

Standard is 261 hp / 282 lb⋅ft No Inspection needed as its exempt From the regs A turbocharger (or supercharger) installation does not require certification, if the installation is available as an option from the original vehicle manufacturer. All vehicle components that were supplied by the manufacturer as part of the original specification for the turbocharged vehicle must also be fitted. Car is insured with all mods declared. Burnouts with open diffs are cr#p. I do have a Turbo LSD to fit but its a big job as i need a new tailshaft and driveshafts and the rear cradle needs to come out to fit it. Giving my wallet a rest for now.

I was tuned by BPT Motorsport in Wangara. I had a chat with them before i started and did plenty of reserch. The engine will be fine with that level of boost. If i was going to run more i would probably do headstuds and valvesprings and maybe oil pump gears if it was going to be bounced off the limiter. I'm more than happy with it as it is, its plenty fast enough to get you into trouble and spectacularly tail happy in the wet.

That’s good to hear, hopefully I can buy a BF Fairmont ghia by the end of the year. The original turbo look is great and and I’m keen to do pretty much the same as you. Great build this is super helpful and sick too see. Fancy xr6 turbo is a mint daily.
