Following my abysmal start to 2020 when i spent 4 months emptying the home id been in for 20 years due to my housing association clearly not knowing their own succession rules, i was left with an empty shell of a house and my personal belongings dotted around surrey, once id got everything back (not including all the stuff i was forced to throw away) ive gradualy been modifying (painting) some walls and adding period accessories (furniture and stuff). Over the last few years ive restored and modified various bits of furnitiure etc, all of which have come from the tip/carboot/charityshop/roadside/hole in the ground/etc. Its slowley comming together and it nice seeing this stuff i like being put together in a way i like to see. Authough i love old furniture, i don't like it too look dated, i like it for the way its made and the little bit of extra niceness it brings. first up, the hall there'd never been much in the hall, just pale green paint and a phone. i had these 2 similer items stashed in the garage and a pallet to make the bits that were missing, and a pot of leftover fence paint add some stuff and... the mirror came from a local 'secret' posh/cheap charity shop for £5, the box covering the elec box made from next doors rubbish, plant pot from tip. since this was taken the wall is now a much darker shade of green. Just last week i picked up 2 glass lampshades that were found abandoned in a block of flats on the other side of the hall is this. nothing there before, the rad cover made from a pallet and more of that fence paint. The pic was there, i liked it because it reminded me of waking up in a show field somewhere, sun through the trees, but it was one of those frameless canvas things, i have a subtle hate for frameless pictures. the frame was free so in it went. with all the green in the hall my uncle gave me this. the found it in a local quarry when he was a kid. every morning theres another bit of rust on the floor. and with plenty of wall going up the stairs for hanging things, i did this. my lodger has already promised to come in smashed one night and tumble down the stairs ripping them all off the wall, ill have the camera ready. that unipart sign is flippin' heavy

Liking what you have created so far.
I suspect there is stuff in my house, loft, garage, sheds that could be added to your decorations without any clashes.

You need a farina front end coming out a wall Grey or red? If you change your mind by the time you get here just stick it in the garage 😂 Thanks for the comments everyone! When I first started doing the house I never thought it'd be something I'd put on here, but as its all come together various visitors have said how unusual and professional it all looks. I've never tried to make it look a certain way, it's just a combination of stuff I already had, I've only had to buy some emulsion and a fancy light bulb. I've been in this house for 20 years, since it was new. The tenancy agreement we had is quite an unusual one, they stopped it years ago to stop the potential of people under occupying it. Apparently one person rattling around in a 3 bedroom house paying less rent than for a private rent rabbit hutch is something they frown upon. 😁 the lodger bit is handy too. It's taken a long time to make it feel like home again, but it's there now.

there was one item from the hall i forgot. i saw a tiny version of this pic online years ago, and later on when i was sorting though dads stash of old car mags i found a full page version, and framed it in a frame i found in a charity shop that i estimated to have been around 100 years old due to the label on the back. onto the living room. everything in here was someone elses rubbish. the first thing is this mirror i picked up from the tip. the vinyl was faded grey and hanging off, the frame was cracked, but i stuck it back together and boot-polished it. the squares are made of different grain vinyl and show up really well. it sits above a unit that i originaly painted white and fitted brass handles to for mum, its reasonably old i think. painted handles black and unit red, rewxed with antique pine. mateus rose box came from a mate, was absolutly fubar'd when i got it. wall was cream but was also knachered so painted it mushroom. not grey. the red used was just emulsion, which is on the wall on the other side of the room, which has this on it a hoofing great pic that dad picked up from the local carboot years ago. as much as i love steam, its not an interest for me, but i love the atmosphere and to me this pic is that atmosphere. its mounted on a thick sheet of hardboard and wouldve been the sort of thing found in a station masters office. dad framed it. ill never sell it. also on that wall is this little lot the big unit was the first piece i restored. dragged out of a skip the frame was as good as a pile of splinters, but i had to have the curved draws. when i painted it i decided to base the idea on an austin maxi dash. black surround, wood centre, silver knobs. turned out quite smart and gave me the bug for it. smaller unit from a mate and had about 1000 coats of gloss on it. they couldnt believe it was the same unit. and that number plate is off a total legend of a car also, i don't do tv, so instead i have this, which is bigger than any tv id want. there are actually 3 in the frame all different. original showroom pics. scored them at a jumble when i was about 14 for £5. i consider them my first proper find. this is one of my favourites. a ladder. it was my grandads, and when emptying the house i almost chucked it away, but instead i screwed some number plates to a piece of wood, then screwed the ladder to it and stashed it at my aunts. i later got given some perfect shelves. perfect for memory type stuff. cameras not playing ball but itll do. at the bottom are dads old motolitas. the cars went, but steering wheels and gearnobs, thats different.

There may be treasures in that there shed. i thought you might like it, ive seen the sort of rubbish you pick up . i might have to take you up on that offer, but tbh ive semi-banned myself from carboots and such like, when i went through emptying 20 years of house tatt it made me so much more conscious of what i had and what i didnt need. having said that its in my nature to womble, and that wont change. afew more pics today including a better one of that steam engine, because it deserves it. i don't know why the wall looks almost pink in photos, its a really rich dark red. this is another item i picked up when i was young, from detling autojumble. we got there stupid early and someone with a transit pickup literaly swepped the contents out of the bed and onto the ground. this was upside down and gave no hint as to what was on the other side, i think it cost me 50p. it went missing when we got home, and resurfaced after dad framed it. ill never need another clock a closer pic of the ladder. bearing in mind its only as wide as the number plates (most are off dads bangers so have been in the family longer than i have) the shelves i was given fitted perfectly. and while I'm on a photo mission, the downstairs bog. not much in there tbh, but a nice mirror. agin from the top secret posh cheap charity shop, i thought it was somesort of cast frame, but after i painted the leaves i realised its carved wood and really nicely done. and finally the pull cord snapped and i had a box of these rings from the job lot of hardware stuff i bought. linked afew together and came up with this. brings a whole new meaning to pulling the chain. as far as the creativity goes, my whole family have always chosen creative hobbies, my mums dad was an artist and was amazing at drawing dogs, dad was an amazing woodworker but cars came first so he didnt develop it as much as he couldve done. being bought up around old stuff and having the weekends i had exposed me to more of it, everyone was picking up old chod and saying I'm going to do this and that to it, and I'm left handed which apparently doesnt help. id rather put a little bit of time and effort into something thats knackered but made properly, rather than buy something shiney and new and made of c%!pb0&rd

A fascinating look into the mysteries of someone else's house, thank you for sharing. It's nice to be reassured I'm not the only one filling my gaff with loosely related automotive, mechanical, engineeringy tat.
Edit: Steam loco is, to my eye, a GWR "King" Can't really make out the number, but looks like a 3 in there? If it's 6023, that's one of the three that still exist. 6003 and 6013 are long gone.

I was saying to redratbike yesterday that you have managed to really create a space where your tat amd treasures have become classy and beautiful. If you look at my hoard, it is just a pile of bits, not quite the same thing. You guys knowing your trains and their histories etc always make me feel quite thick.

That's the skill though, isn't it, Making a pile of differing items become both cohesive and attractive / appealing, (Having been lucky enough to visit your home Grizz I found it to be the same as above,) Nigel

Until it was set out like this it was a pile of tat. Before the 'situation' happened the stuff had simply been bought, restored and hoarded, it wasn't until I had to completely empty the place and look at it all stacked in my aunts garage, and then return it to the house that I was able to do something with it. Nothing had been bought because I thought it would look good with something else, I simply buy things that catch my eye.
And I know what you mean about trains. It was my dad's 'thing'. He was probably more passionate about it than cars. He was a proper trainspotter when he was a kid. I had it talked at me for years, but it never went in. Still love the smells sounds and atmosphere tho. And when you stand next to a steam train, it's alive, no doubt.

Infact it's inspired a relative who has been a proper hoarder for years (I mean can't use the front door because of stuff) in the last month there have been more trips to the tip and to the charity shops with stuff than I've seen in the last 10 years. They found it difficult to know where to start, but then saw how determined I was to get this done and it made them think how good their tatt could look.
