Hello Chaps, I need your help please!! I have a imported 1975 MK3 Cortina which is a standard 3.0 V6 XLE from South Africa. One of my front springs has snapped so I need to replace them. Does anyone know an aftermarket make or replacements I can use? Perhaps Capri/ Granda may fit? I need someone who knows what they are talking about. Also the front brakes have failed, a clip/bracket has broken. See pictures to give an idea. Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks. Tony

We never got 3.0l Cortinas, so there isn't a direct comparison.
We did get 2.3 Cortinas, which use a similar V6. I doubt you'll notice a difference if you use springs intended for one of those.
Personally I found that I never spent enough for Burtons to be interested in giving any advice, all they wanted was the £200 in the till and me somewhere else.

Never had one problem with burton since the 1980s If not go direct to bilstein

Another group said the 2.3 would not be strong enough and would t sit right? Really no idea on this. Coil Springs say they can make a pair if I send one to them for the pattern. Expensive alternative, may have no other choice!!

But not by enough to matter unless you're an F1 testdriver intending to put the Cortina on the front row of the grid. I would be seriously considering something like this LINK

The link just shows the following info:-
Cortina 4/5 V6 Front [RD1007]
Front or Rear: F
Lbs or % Uprated: 275
Lowered (mm)
-3'': -2'': -1'': 12 Std. Ride: 13.0 +1'':
Priced each.
£22.50
Don’t make sense to me?? Are they the springs I need, or at least an alternative? Only driving and enjoying the car - no rally or thrashing it. More like Mrs Daisy lol

The photo is a bit close in to tell the type of caliper, but UK Cortinas had Girling type 16s. I would think that the bottom leg of the anti-rattle spring should be behind the pad pin like it is at the top. Also it looks like the r-clip is missing from the top pad pin - I'm fairly sure I can see an empty hole - I wonder if the strange looking clip you show was someone's attempt at a temporary fix.

Are Falcon springs a valid option? I believe the Australian 3.3 and 4.1 litre inline six Cortinas used most of the same front suspension componentry as their six cylinder Falcon stablemates.

So the clip thing may not be the original piece? As it’s a 3.0 would the front brakes be bigger than the normal 2.0 like the rear shoes?

I would fit some standard length 2.3 MK4 Cortina springs - as Nick has suggested. Even if they are not right - every chance that they will be good enough based on your indicated requirements - at least you will then have a datum on which to work forward from. Or you do it scientifically - remove a good spring - count the coils - measure the free length and the wire diameter or just send to a specialist to copy = Typically about £80 each if they cannot match it from stock As mentioned brake pin looks like it has just not been fitted correctly. How many wheels studs in the hubs ?

More like Mrs Daisy lol It doesn't look confusing to me: it lists 5 springs rated at 275lb/in(probably a small upgrade over stock), which will provide stock, lowered or raised ride heights when used on a V6 Cortina. You decide whether you want stock, 2"(or whatever) lowered and order two of those springs. It's only a Cortina, and those are still common enough for this sort of part to be relatively easy to source.

Possibly to both, I have no experience of genuine 3.0 Cortinas as we didn't get them. Is there a similar piece on the other side caliper? Not sure, suppose a strip down of both sides is needed. Can send spring off to be made and revamp brakes. Where’s me manual 😎

Just wondering if they had been raiding the Granada parts bin. For custom springs / springs copied from existing Faukner will do it and so will SpringcoilETA With the 340# reference you are adding information not given in the original post ! This makes it difficult to give valid advice if you already know what they should be!! If they are 340# springs then just remove the good one to get the OD and the free length and just order one from any spring supplier - or two as best replaced in pairs - However if not 100% certain they are 340# send yours to them.
