Had a play with your image to add window rubbers and door frame in and see how that affected perceived window height  I did understand that thanks. Already put those slices in, but will need to probably tack the boot lid to the opening before moving it/fixing it in place at the correct angle as the surrounding panel distorts quite easily despite the pressing for the boot seal. I think you could stand to lose a little more roof height too. A half inch at least. I may not have been very clear, but I'm not talking about either shortening the boot lid or moving it forwards. The idea is to make cuts between the boot lid frame and the rear wings, so you can tip the boot and its surround forwards (leaving the bottom metalwork below the boot as a 'hinge') and aim the curve of the boot lid to end up exactly where you want it, at the base of the roof. Looks good. It doesn't look wrong at all. I think you could go a shade lower if you wanted, but that's entirely going to be down to your own tastes.

Remember your original thread back in the day and was gutted to see it not reach full fruition. Great to see you've revisited your vision and are having another go at it. Really liking where it's heading, I think it'll look almost factory with a slight kustom edge. I really liked the frenched style headlights and bezels on the old one but someone else mentioned using the existing holes in the grille for some small projector lights and I think that idea has potential, would keep the front end looking 'streamlined'.
Will be watching with interest as you progress, thanks for sharing!

When I've looked back at the old photos the frenched headlights were one of my favourite elements too. At this stage I'm considering a few things on headlights - hidden, behind the grill, small ones frenched into the grill, or frenched like last time but with a smoother bezel (previous ones fitted amazingly size wize but had really sharp profile which would look a bit jarring. I'm sitting right on the fence of buying a Vauxhall Victor F parts car to cut the dash out of to continue the semi custom vibe, just waiting on cash flow. If you go that route … why not just fit the later wings ? That is a later wing, but I wanted frenched style lights if I am going this route, and the Jag headlight area is close to frenched, so I wanted to see what it would look like to graft that in. Here's a quick photoshop with both guards.   |

I think I am leaning towards sticking with lowlight, but not 100% certain. The graft fitted better than I expected. In photos I prefer the lowlight but on many angles in person I prefer the highlight.

Interesting. It would be in fitting with BMC thinking around that time - the frogeye sprite was reportedly going to get pop up headlights originally - but I'm not sure on the aesthetic of the cut out and the appearance when up.  |

Agreed, the lowlight theme makes this stand out so much more. As good as the Jag lights ended up looking, they would probably best on a more subtle custom. The initial vision you had for this was a great sketch right out the gates and the more you've refined the proportions the better it has looked as you've gone down that route. There's hints, and it is only hints, of the Chrysler Thunderbolt concept about what you're building too, that blend of forties streamlining and just the very start of fifties space age style being meshed together.   It just has this overall 1940s vision of the future feel about it. Comic books and Flash Gordon and all that. Speaking of, this is how the '41 Chrysler Newport concept dealt with hidden headlights.  |

With the proportions of the guards I would have to narrow the grill and do flip up headlights at the original lowlight height. A big project, but possible.

It'd be nice if there was some sort of one-way material so you could make a flush-fit panel over the headlights and then, when the headlights are on, they just shine through the material. No need for mechanisms then, just some clever material science.

No matter how good it looked, the high mounted headlights really don't have the unusual wow factor that drew you towards the low_light in the first place, and is exaggerated with smaller or hidden headlights as a fantasy design proposal.
There's also the late '60's American idea of moveable areas of fake grille to hide the headlights, which could possibly be spring loaded & cable-actuated for a more 'period' concept.
Though now some of those pictures have me thinking of the '30's-'50's Pontiac 'silver-streaks' down the middle of the bonnet which match with the mosquito's last minute widening for the Minor....

The (rare) 1942 DeSoto had factory pop ups too. It had a lot more room for them though. I like the round covers on the Buick Y job. Maybe some removable covers would be simplest.  |

Nice! It's one of those things where when you look at a stock Minor, it now looks 'off' in comparison to this. How is with the lowlight front wing on it?

. With nothing to lose other than some time and an old highlight guard I decided to get the grinder out and try some cutting and tacking. Not sure it is the final direction I will go, but it blended remarkably well I think!
