My brother in law had one a few years ago. I'm not a fan, they are pretty cars but I'm after a more sporty drive. Well, my CLK320 does 0 - 60 in just over 7 secs and has a limited top speed of 150 mph. So I'm not sure what you class as a sporty drive but mine seems prety sporty to me!! Parkers tend to agree quoting it's pros as "Looks great with the roof up or down, very refined, strong performance, good to drive"Its quiet, comfortable and handles well. Does 30+ mpg on a run and best of all, being based on the C-Class is very cheap on parts. A good one can be bought for a little over £3k which is prety good for a car that cost near on £50k when new. All agreed but the CLK is more of a cruiser than a back road weapon. I'm after something that connects more with the driver.

I've decided on a 2.5 (six cylinder) Z4. I'm off to see this one tomorrow, it looks a peach in the Auto Trader photos and the spec is just right. It has the M54 engine, which is a good 'un. Fingers crossed.

I don’t mean to sound negative, but surely you can’t get a ‘dream’ car for £5k? A car yes, but a dream car , really? Depends on your dream. What's your dream? Most of the cars I've always really wanted were probably considered pretty run of the mill, by most standards. I don't have a thing for supercars etc, other than the glorious Ferrari F40. My thing is fast, sleeper type saloons and estates from the 70s/80s/90s and a few 80s/90s sports bikes like the VFR400 etc. For some younger guys it might be something similar that's more recent and achievable in a limited budget. I have simple tastes. Dreams are subjective. I will say though, that the specific, insane car prices we are seeing might preclude it, but they are a recent thing and very particular to the current market. So, maybe you're right.

Must agree, these days five grand doesn't seem to buy anything close to a dream car. Here's a few off the top of my head and some already mentioned. I don't know what's actually ULEZ complaint or the size of your garage. Alfa 156 2.0/2.5 V6 Merc SLK (Mk1) Merc 190E 2.6 Lexus GS300 or LS400/430 BMW E46 330i/330Ci - might be over budget? BMW E34 525i Porsche 924 Saab 900/9000/9-3/9-5 - don't know what sort of money they're making now? Honda Accord 2.0/2.2 CB7 (early 90's) - underrated car. Honda Prelude Toyota MR2 Mazda MX5 PeterC, here's a potentially nice car & rare too if slightly pricy. www.motors.co.uk/car-61926314/?utm_source=newsnow&utm_medium=marketplace&utm_campaign=all-vehicles You've listed some cool cars there but some won't be ULEZ compliant and some will definitely cost more than £5k! Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if some of those are over the 5k mark. Anyway good luck with Z4, a car that's never been on my radar so it will be interesting to hear about it in due course.👍

I went to see the Z4 this morning. From ten feet away it looked nice. However, a closer inspection revealed: 1. Badly (freshly) sprayed rear offside wing, with overspray on the fuel filler surround. 2. Badly fitted rear bumper. 3. Driver's door full of filler. 4. Something big is loose inside the driver's door. It made a banging sound each time I closed the door. 5. Badly resprayed nearside rear wing in the past, now suffering with lacquer peel. 6. Localised lacquer peel on other panels. 7. Various bits of plastic were loose / broken / badly glued together. 8. Air con didn't work. 9. Roof didn't work, dealer was going to fit a new motor. 10. The Full Service History wasn't quite complete. There were no receipts and the last stamp in the book dated back to July 2013 - 9 years ago!!! I didn't even bother driving it. It looked like an unloved car tarted up for sale. No good to me. The same dealer had this: A few minor blemishes aside, it looked amazing. The wheels weren't perfect but that's not the end of the world. I am not expecting perfection for £5k. The auxiliary belt was squeaking and the tensioner roller bearing was noisy but the engine sounded sweet. I asked for a test drive. I didn't even get to the end of the road before the 7G started to clunk. I turned around, said my thank yous and left. Complete waste of time. I spent more time at home looking at alternative cool cars and found a few Peugeots RCZs for sub £5k. I love the shape of these cars and had no idea that they have dropped in price so much. However, a bit of quick research revealed that the 1.6T petrol engine is the same Prince unit found in the R56 MINI - a pile of ****. Not for me. The plot thickens.

ULEZ compliance means petrol that meet Euro 4 (or if manufactured prior to E4 , 2005 iirc, would meet it) and Diesel that meet Euro 6. Most petrol cars around 2004-5 meet E4 and some prior to that if compliant emissions are declared by the manufacturer's importer on the V5. E.G. My '04 Boxster 3.2 S is compliant according to the TFL site, other Boxster owners have had their cars of the same vintage ping as non-compliant as the emissions were not recorded on the V5. Good luck as whatever you find will be a true Goldilocks car

Agree regarding the RCZ. Stunning looking car, way nicer than a TT but that engine is too much for me. Nice Z4 but it's in Sunderland - miles away from me! Luckily I had a work related appointment this morning not far from where the dealer selling the Z4 and CLK is based, so I didn't waste too much time and fuel.

I'm not sure how the whole thing works but I am now considering buying an older car.

Fair play, I doubt I would be either.
Odd you sniffed about a RCZ but hated the TT?
Are Honda's out the question? I've got a right hankering for an EP3 Type R at the moment and those are very much in your remit.

The Civic is undoubtedly a cool car, however it's not for me and as I already have an R53, I don't want another hot hatch. I've made contact with the (private) seller who is letting this 330Ci Sport go: He's local and the asking price is well below my budget.

I hated my Mk1 TT because in the very short time I had it, a lot went wrong and the drive wasn't particularly special. It was pretty but the Pug takes pretty to the next level.

This doesn't look good. Looks like the E46 lost 24k miles in October 2008. This means that the recorded 105k miles is actually 130k miles.

Moving on, I've found a 2004 (post facelift) E46 330Ci Sport in West Ealing, which isn't a million miles from me. It has a short MoT and is being sold privately. I wouldn't want it without a fresh ticket.

I found a gorgeous 3.0 Z4. It's advertised with 135k miles, which is a bit more than I would like. But.... It's had a 40k mile haircut in July 2009! The total mileage is 175k! Move on, nothing to see here.
