Great to see this on the road! The oil pressure light came on and stayed on. I was unhappy with this. So I popped a gauge on it and I have great oil pressure. So I bought a new switch. that fixed that. Just for info, hot idle oil pressure should be at least 25psi (if not more) on a decent 1098. A very healthy one will be 35 to 40psi at hot idle. Regarding the stereo, the wiring isn't still positive earth is it? Its making a good 50psi from cold, fast idle Its negative earth

Hang on..... I work at the next set of lights.... Are you local? I quite often see a Chevy truck pulling out of there whilst out and about. If you see a floppy haired idiot waving from a Jag XF or BMW 1 series it is I. Ha,yeah, is the Chevy a 1960ish Suburban type thing in "taupe"? I see that about but I don't know who owns it....

Its making a good 50psi from cold, fast idle Its negative earth That'll continue to live. I think they were still riveting the "CAUTION THIS VEHICLE IS WIRED NEGATIVE EARTH" plates onto them by then. Noisy gravelly whine with the clutch up in neutral is worn layshaft bearings which will make 3rd howl. Easy enough repair and worth it if you plan on using the car regularly.

Yeah, IIRC the Minor was always Positive Earth from the factory, usually they get converted so a stereo can be fitted.... I'll budget for a gearbox rebuild at some point.... I plan to use the car a fair lot

I have a spare that only needs a light overhaul (and a rebuild kit in a box somewhere), if you'd like to keep it on the road while you do it.
Just taking up space since I went Ford Type 9.

SITREP Morris. Brakes still braking but need a rebleed. I think there is still air floating about in the system. All* electrical issues now resolved. The car charges, signals work both sides and the horn works I pulled the dynamo off and checked the stator and brushes, I tried the loop back test, I tried repolarising and so on but nothing, so I replaced the control box and still nothing. Called an auto electrician and in 10 minutes he had it all good. The new control box needed adjusting....

Oh dear dear. I had three activities planned for today and I thought I would take the Morris. Activity one was completed fine, that was a couple of local runs. Then I got all confident and headed out to Tamworth. 10 miles or so of A road running in 27 degree heat and.... Time for a ride in a big yellow taxi. Wasn't 100% sure if the fuel gauge was lying so he took me to fill up, which is the oddest thing ever ,filling up on the back of an AA flatbed... Anyway, it wasn't that. it was the fuel pump. And still is. So thats the next job. Although I did make it home with it, with a couple of stops to let it cool down / hit it with a wheel brace.

Its making a good 50psi from cold, fast idle Its negative earth That'll continue to live. Perhaps on an old American V8, however the hot idle reading is what's important for assessing an A Series - less than 25psi and it's time to start thinking about a rebuild - in contrast, a very healthy 1098 will be showing 40psi at hot idle. Anyway, it wasn't that. it was the fuel pump. And still is. So thats the next job. Although I did make it home with it, with a couple of stops to let it cool down / hit it with a wheel brace. For some reason, the fuel pumps on Minors often stick, but a firm tap usually sorts them out. Bear in mind though that the fuel lines run close to the exhaust, and the carb is right above it. With modern fuel being more volatile & prone to vapourisation than the fuel that these cars were designed for, it may be worth looking at heat shielding. Twenty years back when I had mine, there was a kit available to shield the fuel lines & carb - IIRC, it came from a company called Mr Grumpy!

I'm just used to the days where an A series was ten quid from the scrappy and you could tolerate it knocking and smoking a bit...

It'll drive for 5 miles or so and then the pump dies. Sometimes less than a mile. It was a less than fun drive home. I found if I stuck to 30 and didn't go up hills it drove for longer. In any case, beating the pump got it going again and the car started right up again.
Not sure if heat soak due to the weather or because its an old pump and suddenly being pushed back into normal use has been too much for it. Either way I'm putting a new one on and away we should continue to go.

It's probably the pump points, which are a super simple job to do and double type points add a little more reliability.

I always remember my sisters one - bonnet up, whack with the steering lock and it would instantly tick into life.
I sorted it out by cleaning the contacts by unscrewing the cap but had I known about the kits, I'd have just swapped it out.

Yeah the pump points are burned to hell. I assume the diaphragm isn't in great shape either. theres a needle which can stick also apparently. I am replacing the old pump with an electronic type pump. problem should go away for ever then. Famous last words.

Ha! I don't trust electronic ignition or electronic fuel pumps - they're binary - broken or not! The old style you have a shot at fixing on the roadside. Also I had an electronic dizzy try to catch fire a little bit once.

i think points might have a renaissance, read allot from a specialist that gets involved on forums, says that HEI ignition systems (while stoically reliable) are pretty poor performance in comparison, due to 50,000 volts zipping right past the sensitive electronics which replace the points, 1000s of time a minute
p.s sorry to read about your ride of shame, but i suppose its part of the "retro" experience to break down in a morris? when you look at the top 10 reasons AA/RAC get called out (like miss fueling, lost keys, flat battery) you get to realise how reliable modern cars actually are (despite purists moaning about complicated electronics)

I haven't broken down for a while - I kind of miss it - got my best screwdriver from a recovery guy (left in the bonnet)!
