As you probably noted, I own a dark blue 1994 Fiesta CTX which was most likely a Motability car when it was new. There's a thread on it which I probably should link to here, but the short story is that I bought it out of a front garden in Loughborough. Not so long after, and not so long ago, a mate Mark mentioned he had acquired a Morris Minor to flip. I asked about it out of passing curiosity because I don't need yet another car, especially a project car, although I've a soft spot for Morris Minors. "Odd thing, its an ex-disability car" he comments, showing photos of a dark blue car. Well, that seemed like fate. So I popped down to have a look at it, managed to run the frikkn Country Squire out of petrol like 400 yards from the petrol station, oh and I was nipping out while prepping work which needed to be presented the next morning, but.... The petrol station is just the other side of those traffic lights... I got gas: And bottom line, I got a Morris Minor. 3 days before I was due to fly out to do my road trip in the 1975 Ford.... Oh well, timing can't be helped. "Government Property" makes me smile every time. The conversion was done by a company called Reselco who are sadly nolonger in business, but I found some images online of what the conversion would have looked like and I can see a number of odd brackets and so on where the hand controls would have been connected up. Also Morris enthusiasts will note the indicator stalk moved to the other side of the column and the dipswitch for the headlights relocated where it was more easily operated by a hand control lever. So the car seemed solid, complete and ran OK, but the brakes were weak as heck. So I took it and had it delivered the next day and it came with a pile of parts I am slowly selling off as they aren't needed I work from home so was a little surprised to pop down for a cuppa and find that lot (plus car) sat in my garden So once I got back from the USA I started looking at the Minor. Amazinng to think that the Minor is newer than the Country Squire! The weak brakes are seized off front cylinders, which I managed to turn into siezed ON front cylinders. Not a great improvement TBH I've done a service, and now the car starts a whole lot easier. I got Champion plugs and the spinny roundy openny closey stuff from Distributor Doctor. I also did the cap and leads with good quality ones. Some jiggery and a little pokery and the passenger side turn signals now function. Mostly. Thats a fair size box o stuff, and the brake stuff is all in there, yet to be fitted There is also an issue with the Generator light on all the time, so I guess its not charging. Those 2 topics to be looked into and I can get it on the road then! 2 disability vehicles close on a quarter century apart

Always liked these. Had one for my first car over twenty years ago, and it's an itch that I want to scratch again. There is also an issue with the Generator light on all the time, so I guess its not charging. Worth checking the points on the dynamo control box - the only time I ever had the charge light misbehave on my old Minor was due to the points, and easily sorted.

Thats my first point of call. The second is to adjust the output. I had to do this on my Hawk. It was a bit of a process but a mate talked me through it

Standard Minor brakes then Will be really interested to see the controls, period modifications fascinate me for some reason. LOL - stock Minor brakes are OK for a car with 40 bhp I am trying to get more info on the hand control conversion. There are a couple of these cars known to the MMOC which still exist but none have the controls left. I have some brackets and bits in odd places but thats all. There is a guy who apparenly knows a bit about it and someone who apparently has some parts from one. I will investigate.

The dynamo might of course just be worn out. They’re easy enough to check the output and re-flash, check brushes etc.
Let’s have a pic of the motability conversion then!

I'm playing with the charging now* Electrics aren't my favourite thing. Using the "Ford method" it would appear to be that there is no field signal from the control box. But apparently the Ford method doesn't work on these and I've been told to do bunch of other things bridging terminals and whatnot. The only pic I have of a disabiliy conversion is the one I posted from the advert. These things just did not survive as they were removed before the cars were auctioned off. Theres a couple of guys in the club seem to know more but I need to push them for more info.

Recommissioning continues. Electrical issues in the charging system seems to be "everything is knackered" but the oil warning light on the dash turns out to have just been a defective switch.
MORE parts on order. Just happy they are cheap and easy to get.
brakes as yet unattempted
rich running condition noted but not addressed.

I wonder how much market/demand there is from disabled classic car enthusiasts for cars that were converted when new? It's a very niche point of interest for very specific period modifications!

Given the demographics of most classic car enthusiasts and the mobillity issues many in that demographic face - I'd say there is decent demand!
I've seen a few minors with automatic gearbox conversions for those with such issues.

Well, that escalated quickly.... The brakes were locked on. I bought some brake parts. I bought the wrong parts (or rather the wrong combination of parts) so then bought some more. Then found there was a bizarre incompatibility with some parts and some other parts. Bought some more parts. Bottom line is that I would have saved a lot of time and money if I had bought the complete kit of parts in one go at the start. Oh well. 4 attempts and the brakes are functional. The oil pressure light came on and stayed on. I was unhappy with this. So I popped a gauge on it and I have great oil pressure. So I bought a new switch. that fixed that. I still have a raft of minor issues (yuk yuk) which include, but are not limited to: * Not charging properly * Passenger turn signal works intermittantly. (no, I know...) * loud noises of the incorrect type from the gear box * many rattles caused by someone having removed all the door rubbers * laughable stereo installation * everything else all of which can be attended to at some point. But today I managed to go shopping in it. WIN. It lives! The horn push fell off and landed in my lap. But it lives!

If the noises from the gearbox are in 1st most of them are like that, ham fisted previous owners forcing the non synchroed gear in, if it doesen't jump out they seem to work finel ike it, ours sounds terrible in 1st but just did a 200 mile round trip towing a trailer with no problems.

All indirect gears are noisier than I recall they should be. 3rd is a howler. I've not checked and changed the oil yet. It changes beautifully. Everything stays in gear. I forget the rules of bearings, there is whining which is loud with the car in neutral and the clutch engaged. Prsss the clutch and the noise stops. I vaguely recall thats the thurst bearing. Odd its not noisy in top. I've had automatics mostly for years, I get stuff slowly coming back from the old days I drove manuals gears whine as you drive it.

In top the input shaft is connected to the ouput shaft and none of the bearings see any side load, from what you describe it sounds like the input or lay shaft bearings.

Hang on.....
I work at the next set of lights.... Are you local?
I quite often see a Chevy truck pulling out of there whilst out and about.
If you see a floppy haired idiot waving from a Jag XF or BMW 1 series it is I.

Great to see this on the road! The oil pressure light came on and stayed on. I was unhappy with this. So I popped a gauge on it and I have great oil pressure. So I bought a new switch. that fixed that. Just for info, hot idle oil pressure should be at least 25psi (if not more) on a decent 1098. A very healthy one will be 35 to 40psi at hot idle. Regarding the stereo, the wiring isn't still positive earth is it?
