The very idea of an automatic gearbox. I was aware of them from a young age, but assumed you had to move the T-shaped lever yourself, albeit without the inconvenience of a clutch. It was only when our Marina died a few days before the family holiday and my dad had to hire a Cortina 2.3 auto, that I realised the car actually changed gear by itself. Blew my mind. Also, 4 headlights - makes anything cool, right? On a Hondamatic you do have to shift manually to get L.

I was always impressed with the Rover P4’s interlocking for the overdrive.
None of this “just flicking a switch” and letting it slur in or out like most cars, no, there’s a pair of throttle position inhibitor microswitches, a switch to make sure you’re in 4th gear, and another under the throttle pedal.
If you’re on the power in top, and you switch in the overdrive, it won’t engage until you back off, to ensure a smooth shift.
Likewise, if you’re on the overrun and switch out, it won’t disengage until you apply some throttle.
If you’re cruising in O/D and floor it, it’ll drop out of overdrive automatically and hold straight 4th until you back off, when it’ll drop back into overdrive again.
For a totally analogue system of relays, switches and sprung levers, on a car with its technology rooted in the 1930s, it’s a lovely touch and adds a lot to the driving experience.

Must have been subliminal because I didn't know that's why I have ended up with it. Roof spoiler ! However it does tick every box for many other features The inner child in me wants to see on a car. Big rear spoiler Big chin spoiler Louvres Big Arches Stupid large tyres Pop-up lights A dash completely filled with dials and switches Doors with crash helmet storage Gravity powered windows Carbs you can see in the rear view mirror So although I never thought I wanted one - I guess I did.

Mk2 cavalier cdi door pockets/satchels, with central locking and electric windows it tipped 18 year old me into a logbook signing frenzy on an 8 year old car that still had some of its rear wheel arches left!!

I had a different take on auto gearboxes when I was a kid, assuming them to be fully automatic, and asking my father how they knew when you wanted to reverse.
The one thing which made me want a Mk2 Jag was their popularity with armed robbers. I'm not quite sure what that says about me; my wife probably has a hypothesis.

I must of been about 13/14 when my uncle turned up one day in a white xr3i mk4 and apart from the digital clock obesssion, the speaker control was a joystick on the dashboard - a hell of a lot of engineering just to change the balance and fader. This, along with the orange buttoned cassette holders were the pinnacle of cool for me - even the factory car stereo was on another level with the first in car digital tuner I have seen and soft rubber buttons, and the most satisfying rubber touch 'push volume power' button click ever. RDS was some kind of evil witchcraft especially during the top 40 on a sunday eve!

Apparently I was very young, my diet of American car chase tv shows had me telling my dad that as I was right-handed I should have a LHD car to enable my stronger arm to be changing gears
I'd just assumed you would choose RHD or LHD depending on preference

Incredibly prosaic compared to most on here, but this is the engine bay of a Mk1 Triumph 2000: Notice how the heater matrix is very bulky and on the engine bay side of the bulkhead? I figured if I replaced that with a small motorsports unit under the passenger's side of the dash, I could cut back that little plinth and squeeze an AJ6 in there. Turns out, after purchasing one, there is! I'd always wanted a T2000, and this is what swayed me in the direction of a Mk1 rather than a Mk2 as I rather like both of them. I'd also always wanted to fit the AJ6 into a smaller car as they're stunning engines, and could make a British version of the whole 'S38 into an E30' thing I like so much. Put 2 and 2 together and now I've got yet another project to get done

From a young age I always loved a car with a sliding door. I always thought how cool it must be to drive with your door open. I still think that it is the coolest thing ever! Easy pleased am I? Yes I agree but, don't open the door when going fast as all the dust and grit in the back becomes airborne and wizzes round your head like a tornado and then goes in your eyes. Ask me how I know

...which enables one to wind down the rear window, sit on the closed tailgate, and shoot over the roof while someone else drives. Perfect for rural pest control work.

Can't say that it was a reason for wanting a P6 - the V8 was enough for that - but I always found the spare on the boot lid rather cool.

P6B is a lovely car but having the spare wheel on the boot lid like that would annoy me very quickly.
