While production for the Mk2 Passat stopped in 1987 in the rest of the world, the saloon was produced by VW until 2012 for the Chinese market. Named the VW Santana, it became a common sight all over China as more than 3 million cars rolled out of the Shanghai factory over the decades. Reliability, robust engineering, and toughness made them ideal cars for China’s rough roads in the 90s and early 2000s. They continue to provide trusty service for Chinese families, taxi fleets, police forces and driving schools to this day.
The VW Santana became China’s CROWN Victoria. Nowadays, there’s a large enthusiast following for these boxy and dependable retro saloons. In 2019, KGO Customs out of Guangzhou, China drove a Santana Wagon from China over land to attend the Worthersee VW festival in Austria.
