Evening learned compadres. Rather annoyingly the powdercoat on my beetle axle is failing (peeling on sharp edges). I’ve elected to strip and etch prime/paint it but what’s the best way to get the old stuff off?
I’m using a Norton Blaze Rapid Strip disc on my angle grinder at the moment which is chuffing awesome, but they are £10 a pop and I’m burning through it at quite a rate. Any suggestions for cheaper alternatives please?
Oh and is chassis black still the right choice for under car components?

Standard flap disc makes short work of pretty much anything on an angle grinder.

Dichloromethane is the daddy for this job, but it'll proper mess you up bad if you don't wear protective gear and in a well ventilated area.

Standard flap disc makes short work of pretty much anything on an angle grinder. How aggressive are flap discs? Don't think I've ever used one before? I've seen people using them to 'grind' down welds before, I don't want to be taking metal off?

You can get them in different grits. All of them are pretty aggressive, but you don't need to be hard with them. Just glancing them over the surface will take powder-coating off nicely without impacting the metal underneath significantly.
I've be careful on edges and profiles though. They work nicely on flatish areas because it spreads out the area of the sanding disc, but if there's a lip or edge it'll go through that quite quickly if you're not careful.

You can get 40 grit through to 320 grit so they can be pretty brutal or as gentle as you want to be. I've got a grinder with adjustable speed control which is worth its weight in gold.

We use Dichloromethane at work - dissolves powder coat like thinners dissolve paint.

Trouble is I've got Delrin bushes inside and chemicals will probably turn them into a gelatinous mess!

Revival of an old-ish thread. Are the Beetle axles cast? I have bad luck with powder coating in particular on castings, it flakes off.

I'm pretty sure they are, yes. Going for etch primer and paint this time!

Hi, the lesson to be learnt here is to round off the sharp edges, paint doesn't stick to sharp edges it pulls back from the edge and so it seems does powder coat. You don't have to go mad just a slight radius will do.

Thanks Colin. The issue I have is that the end plates are exactly that - laser cut from plate, so there are number of right angle edges to deal with.

Right, so after many hours of curse word the neighbours off with the angle grinder and strip discs, I gave up and took it back to Paul at Redditch Shotblasting who blasted it back to bare metal whilst carefully masking up the bushes. As ever, Paul did a great job and I've got it back home ready for paint. I need to give it a blast over with the airline but then it needs a clean and degrease. What does everyone use to degrease ready for paint? Regular panel wipe like this amzn.eu/d/7Gmm4QH and tack cloths?
