So, my first question is: where would I source a coupler to replace the broken one? A brief search shows other mowers like this one using solid couplers, is that acceptable ?

I love an old mower! If you grind off the flanges of the existing coupling, find a short length of snug fitting car radiator hose and a couple of jubilee clips each end and it will last for ages.

Cool find. I was going to recommend a Ruland jaw type coupler. The ends come in all diameters. But the rad hose idea sounds like it'll work. I wouldn't go solid, the coupler allows for a bit of misalignment and it'll stop it knocking its bearings out.

I wouldn't worry too much about the rough ground. The more often you mow it the smoother it will get. I'm impressed with the cutting capacity of that thing. Did it make quite hard work of the long thick grass or just take it in its stride as it were?

Did it make quite hard work of the long thick grass or just take it in its stride as it were? Even with the rusty blades it went through it like it wasn't even there, the cut is night and day compared to the cheapo 'spinning blade' flymo type mower I normally use.
