My trusty 80s Ford Stereo has given up for the time being. Wont keep cassettes in and when they do stay in they wont play... Anyway. As I put my Stereos on an ISO block I thought maybe I should try a cheapo DAB Ebay stereo so I can listen to 6 Music and 80s 70s stations etc... Anyone else bought these £40 ones? I cant really stretch to a good one right now but tempted by these cheap Chinese ones on ebay. I understand they wont sound great but nothing sound that good in an Escort mk3 For example... I have a 300w amp under the dash so no problem with speakers. That how I use things like this...

I've never bought a new radio. A good brand second hand one is normally the same price as new unknown brand.

I've had a few Xtrons ones with no issues at all, they're a little sluggish on start up but other than that nothing.

I had a Silvercrest (Aldi) stereo, it was pretty awful and used lots of power and got very hot (no good for camper van) stick to big name brands DAB+ and get them used, i have bought several for my cars on ebay for 25-40 quid. Some do not have disc drives in, bear in mind when browsing. you will need a special DAB aerial too and there are a couple of different kinds of connector plugs. i bought one that sticks in the windscreen.

Thanks for the advice guys! Maybe i'll hold off and fit another cassette deck for a bit. I did a job last year driving vans so DAB appeals to me. I did order one of those £20 silver stereos for me Dads spitfire, the speakers are so bad i'm not quite sure how it performs hence thinking I could get away with a cheap DAB in the Escort. Like you say... you get what you pay for though.

Scrap that! I just found a Sony DAB stereo on ebay with the DAB aerial. Put in an offer of £40 and got it! I think it will be a nice upgrade plus hopefully it will wont take any rewiring as it has an ISO block and I have had a Sony unit in this car before.

Bit of a DAB update. The stereo turned up and once I figured out my funky ISO wiring and found it a new ground wire, we had sound! I've run the DAB ariel down the passenger sill and into the rear side window. It all works really well and sounds pretty good (a few drop outs). The only think is I don't have a permeant live. I think as the stereo has a bullet connector on the Stereo side of the ISO I could maybe tap a wire with a fuse to the Battery positive. I think it really needs this as there as so many channels by the time you get to the station you want your at the end of your trip haha.
