I've recently fitted coilovers to my car, and have basically just used the existing top mounts to get them on there. I presumed they'd be 'ready to go'. From what I can gather though, there's a flaw in this, because the spring cap at the top has a smallish surface area where it rests against the top mount. I've tried to scribble something down, see below. So what I'm basically assuming, is that this will cause a pressure point in the middle, and is essentially trying to push the rubber bush through the mount. Am I correct? On the front existing struts there was a spacer that sortof spreads the load, but the rears do not.So I'll have to make something?

You need to make sure the pressure is on the part of the top mount that it normally is basically. Usually it's around the centre, if you stick a photo up of the spacer you mention it's usually pretty obvious.

I get what you mean though, I have to basically duplicate what the pressure points were previously on any bits I've removed, i.e. the old spring top cup. Might be a case of adding in a piece cut from the old parts? Having driven it round the block, I could sense something a bit off, and on the rear, one of the top mount bushes is starting to push through. Ordered a new pair to be safe.

Yeah that's all I do, you sometimes need to machine the top cap but sometimes you can use washers to space bits apart. Wouldn't be able to say without looking at it, most of the issues I've seen have been the edge of the spring cap binding up on the outer rubber part of the top mount before it's flush against the centre.

Appreciate the advice, thank you.

Here's the parts. The original spring actually met the outer ring of the top mount, so there was no pressure on the bush area, except for if/when it bottomed out, the two cups are what went over the bump stops - I could possibly use these I guess. Second pic shows where the bush is coming away. Whole mount is toast tbh, look at the rust!
