Heating up oil and coolant

Hi, Stepping back from your question. Try the cycling because it's low impact, you're not putting your body weight on the knees so they are having an easier time of it. In fact it could even improve their mobility.

Do You mean to just place it under the engine or to make some connections to oilpan or engine block?

To a degree there is mo such thing as bad weather, just wrong cloting. I used to commute by bicycle year round, and with the right gear the worst weather is tolerable. Having said that i did not cycle with snow on the ground as I no longer bounce very well.

A 50cc petrol scooter would warm up quickly and not cost much to run. Have a look on Facebook marketplace or Ebay for something under £500.

In the winter my engine oil reaches a whopping 46°C by the time I get to work.

Don't gun it all the time. The quickest way to get the engine up to temperature is to drive it. Just do it carefully.

My knees sound better than yours. After Covid, and on and since then (and probably after), my knees haven't been what they were.

A few things have helped as others have said

-Better clothing
-Knee supports if I think they're not going to last
-Correct saddle height. It amazes me that some folks don't do this, as it is probably the most critical thing for not knackering the knees. If the saddle is too tall, get a dropper post fitted, giving the best of both worlds (i.e low saddle when sat in traffic, high saddle when moving ; It's popular in the Scandinavian countries)
-Having the right bike . I've gone from a roadie to a hybrid/commuter. Huge difference on hills, and how tired I get, mainly as the tyres are a friendlier size, and I have far more gears to play with.

But it does sound like things are marginal with yourself, but it's something to consider.



I do this, albeit on the CG125.

Pros are

-It's amazing on fuel. If the fuel gauge isn't lying, it's doing 100MPG on this tank.
-It's fun
-Traffic is almost a problem of the past

Cons are
-125s are around £1-2k to buy for something that's not a bag of horse poo. 50ccs may be more for something which is good as well
-I've had to invest in motorbike clothing. This probably set me back £600 (Helmet, jacket, shoes, jeans, gloves etc.). Granted, I plan to motorbike for a while and the jeans can come in handy elsewhere, but that's still quite an investment. A £1k bike then becomes £1.6k. Yes, you can just get a helmet, but if you can do more than 30MPH, it really doesn't ttake long to get down to the bone if you fall off
-When the weather is curse word it's not as good, and can be a little depressing. But, judgement calls can be made on this using the weather apps etc. and a bit of luck on the day. It's not stopped me.
-You then have to get changed and store stuff at work. Handy if you can. Risky if you can't (last workplace, I didn't have a locker, so my kit would have been on display and vulnerable to tea leaves in the office. Yes, you can get helmet boxes for your bike, but it's another expense...

But, it is good fun, and I can recommend it



I think to have a powered bike, it will need to then be registered to the DVLA. I know many don't, but for it to be 'legal' the motor can only be there as assistance.

As for things never warming up, I blamed this for my 323i's crankcase system becoming a mayo'd mess. As soon as I started doing longer drives it was fine. I'm not the first one to notice this. Cars that are often moved out of garages and then turned off without being fully warmed up tend to mayo up alot in the crankcase ventilation components.
