Something strange in the neighbourhood! Who ya gonna call? Prolly the local council ASB team. A bit of background : It's been a sh!t few years and I've done nothing automotive. No events, no racing, no builds - nothing, nada, rien, nichts. Pandemic didn't help, M-I-L with Alzheimers is not helping with me and O.C. House as carers. The needle of the mojo meter was banging on the stop peg. And then georgeb passed and that was really the bottom as the needle broke off the stop peg. We'd had many an off-forum communication and he just went dark (by the by let's keep him in our conversations and just like Discworld his name will forever echo on the clacks). Anyhoo I had a big re-evaluation with also coming up to my three score and ten and decided that I would not, like this this guy says Now once upon a time I had an idea of a gas turbine powered AH Sprite (the SpridJET ©Mr vulgalour ) to upset the hallowed Austin Healey Club but that got dropped because the author of the book I was using to prove provenance couldn't remember where he saw/heard (he was 83 years old) that Donald Healey was interested in gas turbine cars. So I sold the Sprite shell and the Lenham bodywork and put my three turbines away to concentrate on adult stuff. Jump forward to the present day and putting my @ rse into gear I sold the two firepump turbines to a very nice gentleman on here, tracked down another Rover/Lucas APU from a Vulcan in working fettle. Had a trip oop t' far north with an envelope of cash and did a deal on this. And now? Well More later

All I need to hear is the headline that you are going to put an engine out of a Vulcan bomber in a car.....
What you need now is a much larger gas turbine to drive a transporter to move it around.

What you need now is a much larger gas turbine to drive a transporter to move it around. As I have two, one from a Vulcan and one from a Nimrod, 300 shp should be enough to get the old girl moving but the brakes are a bit weedy for the speeds achievable with the 130 bhp Cummins. Sadly to get a common output shaft we would need to do something like this

I know the Bedford isn't exactly rapid, but is this plan to fix that entirely reasonable? You must remember this classic prose (I should be so lucky) on Goddess speeds and relativity 0-10mph = Bimbling - a slow to very fast walk speed - stopping distance - the next street 11-20mph = Trundling - can overtake some cyclists and also the sound of their bikes being crushed into the roadway - stopping distance - the next village 21-30mph = Wombling - giving milk floats and legal mopeds a run for their money - stopping distance - the next parish 31-40mph = Bombling - tailgating pensioners and pulling pedestrians off the pavement with the slipstream vortex - stopping distance - the next county Over 40 mph - laws of conventional physics have packed their bags and gone home - stopping distance - the brakes are on fire so who knows ;D
Not too happy with Wombling and Bombling so close together and need something to describe the white-knuckle, arm-sawing, pant-wetting speed between 41-50mph. You're unlikely to see a Goddess over 50mph unless it's in freefall or it's mass-inertia is distorting the space-time continuum so much that it is actually travelling forward in time.The limitation will always be the inertia versus the cardboard brakes

You just need to keep robbing the Vulcan parts bin for the parachute (I'm guessing with no reverse trust on the olympus and a landing weight of around 50T even with air brakes on the Vulcan the goddess might even have outbraked one)!

The Car This is no secret because you don't want to upset Mr rmad on Readers Rides so I read the rules. I did think about a Rover but they've been done to death. The plan is to mount the turbine on a 'skid' so it can be literally fitted to nearly any vehicle as long as the exhaust can be accommodated. From the reduction gearbox there will be a chain or belt drive to drop the drive to the driveline of the vehicle. Transmission noise will not be a problem with the turbine masking all other noise. Apart from all the other engineering 'challenges' the reduction box will be home-made because no one makes an off-the-shelf gearbox with a 46k rpm input speed. The gearbox using straight-cut commercial gears will have an unquantifiable lifespan and the free turbine output shaft is a weedy just over 18mm or 23/64ths of an inch. I don't need to be shuttling round paddocks on the turbine so a FWD drive donor would be ideal and also something with a chassis and a big boot opening so I can pull the turbine skid out quickly to change the made-from-chocolate gearbox. 2CV it is then, with 2 engines, 2 gearboxes, 2 diffs and a 15 gallon per hour of Jet A-1 drinking habit. That 50mpg 602cc up front looks very attractive in that light.

What sort of ratio are you looking for, electric cars run the motors up to around 20,000 rpm and have reduction boxes of around 10:1 could you use one of these somehow?

Sadly, I was rather late to the party in frequenting these pages, so I missed the contemporary musings of the great georgeb I have subsequently caught up with his threads and thoroughly enjoyed all of them. I need to source a kindle now so I can download his book from amazon. What a gentleman and wordsmith he was. Sadly missed. RIP George. Steering back towards the thread subject, these two sentences make this thread firmly in the 'bookmark' camp, and possibly should go down in RR history. What sort of ratio are you looking for, electric cars run the motors up to around 20,000 rpm and have reduction boxes of around 10:1 could you use one of these somehow? Going for a 5.333:1 two-stage reduction giving 8625rpm at max free turbine revs. With the 2CV box in fourth that would give 120mph approx. I checked out many gearbox manufacturers but they all wanted molto dinero and I want to do it myself. Frankenhealey, probably: Yes, I'd like a 2CV but I'd like it to be even more dangerous, please. And fast. Fast? 120mph - faster than a gas turbine 2CV has ever gone Dangerous? Wait until I start talking about water/methanol foggers Mad, just mad … did I say mad…. Nope, my mother had me tested

I know what you mean about georgeb - I was surprised at how much his death affected me, considering my only interaction with him was on line. As I said over on his thread, he just seemed like the sort of fella you could sit and have a natter with over a cold beer or two. Such a real shame - I still have a look in on his thread every once in a while - the other day I was at a local purveyor of adult beverages and came across some San Mig... cheers to you georgebLooking forward to whatever unfolds on these here pages - I am sure that George would approve.
