The LT35 ANJ 2.5 tdi threw a wobble a few nights ago as i was driving, it suddenly sounded like the engine was not timed properly and lost power, after plugging it in we got a P1248 code and cleared it but the issue is still there and the code returned, The physical timing looks fine as in no jumped belts so a quick google seems to point to "Start of Injection Timing Regulation not OK" which in my head means the pump timing or some king of electrical timing being the issue, is there any common fault or issue that this could be, the vehicle is a well maintained 150,000 2004 plate but i did drive over a rubble road 2 days before this happened that shook the daylights out of it, the LT was scanned again and the same code is back P1248, both the N108 AND G80 are within specs, i have now got a new N108 on the pump but as i drive it seems to have no power then suddenly burst into life and pulls like a train again, but that issue is not always there but has only started since it threw a wobble while driving, It starts fine hot or cold and does not smoke, i have wiggles everything i can get at so not i am stuck, anyone ever has an issue like this?

The only other things that come to mind that affect timing are the crank position sensor and the needle lift sensor (G80, on injector 4). The latter particularly can produce very similar symptoms to what you describe, but you’d generally expect to get an error code related to it.
Something else I’ve seen mentioned in the past is that an insufficiently tensioned pump drive belt can produce all kinds of odd running and unexpected error codes.
Will be very interested to hear what you discover - these older 5-pots are generally extremely reliable.

I will look into things you have mentioned, It has been amazingly reliable till now and that's why i want to fix it, i think tomorrow will be a full day of checking all the connections and looking for anything that might be a stupid issue but i am going to try and check the timing and i think i will just have to invest in a ross tech VCDS set up as they seem to be very useful, if i find what the problem is i will post an answer for others to see.

Dunno if your fuel filter is the same as my A6AEL but I’ve had issues with the water drain tap on the filter bring a cunning little sod and allowing air in without actually leaking liquid. That caused lots of air bubbles in the transparent pipe and extended cranking times but no other run issues.
Also had a problem on an Arosa SDI with extreme difficulty priming after a filter change which turned out to be the nylon feed hose rubbed through to a pin-hole on top of the tank.

I have ordered a DTi set up for setting the Bosch VE pump just in case the pump timing is out and found the VCDS ross tech lite software is free for pre 2004 VAG motors so i just need a usb to ODB lead, i will post info on how i get on.

I think you will find, unless things have changed recently, that Ross-Tech Lite in freeware form does not allow access to the TDI timing graph function, which is what you need. Which is a nuisance as it’s just about the only thing I’ve ever needed it for….

The “intermittent” suggests to me that the timing hasn’t slipped as such but may be sometimes out of range as the belts have aged and stretched. In my experience you need to retime the injection when the belts are changed and again about halfway through belt life.
Presumably the other codes are historical from the ignition being switched on with a loom plug disconnected?
Does that version of VCDS-lite give access to the pump timing graph?
Good luck with the belt change . The crank pulley bolt torquesare monstrous!

Nick The belts were changed today but we ran out of time to fire it up, I got a timing kit with the tool for the crank and a new crank pulley as the old one was very cracked and the rubber was failing, my neighbour made a tool for holding the rear cam pulley so we got the pump timing set at 0.55mm, I'm not sure if the codes are historical but with all the things we have been doing it could well be things were unplugged during testing and yes it is a full copy so it has the timing graph which i tested on my T4 TDi 2.5. fingers crossed it should be no worse lol

Well so far so good, it has started but not timed it dynamically yet, it still has not turbo boost at all so starting to suspect the N75 boost control valve may be dead

So good news the VW LT is back together and started just about so we got the lap top and a KKl lead to talk to the ODB using VCDS from ross tech and after a few goes got the timing almost bang on the centre line which is good enough for us, all the fault codes have been cleared and tomorrow it is out for a local test and rescan, the N75 turbo control valve is still suspect but that is an easy swap, thanks all for input and interest.  |

Well the LT still has issues, we changed the N75 turbo control valve today and it still has errors and runs like a bag of poop, as i need the van this weekend the ECU has been sent for testing because after that it must be wiring issues  |

I have sent the ECU for testing and they have said it needs "a full rebuild" as it is kaput, i am in their hands as i have to trust they are honest, but if it still has the same faults after i get it back i will give them ear ache

Ok for anyone following this we have a result, the ECU was faulty and after a repair the van started and ran like a dream, there was 2 codes still one saying "engine start blocked by immobilizer " P1570 and another saying "Quantity adjuster lower limit reached " P 1563 but that was before it had a run around, i will retest tomorrow
