This is kinda a theoretical question but it got me thinking. Could you use the dizzy to switch ground rather than live to the coil and then either batch fire 2 pin coil on plug units when the coil fires or pass the ground through the center pin on the cap and fire each cop individually.
Got me thinking because I have knackered plug leads and decent one are as much as 4 cheap but probably still better COP units
And very easily reversed. I’m probably being an idiot and missing the fundamental flaw

The distributor usually does switch ground. The coil is fed a +12v feed and grounding it via the points creates the spark.
As you state, the issue you would face is how to switch each coil at the right time. Just using the points to fire the coils will cause them all to go off together. As the distributor cap relies on a high voltage spark jumping between the rotor arn and the plug lead connections it is a non-contact switch. So it wouldn't be possible to use it to switch the ground to each of the coils. You would need to somehow replicate the function of the rotor arm but with a proper contact switch to switch the ground instead of HT.
What sounds like a simple idea will get very complicated extremely quickly unless you use an aftermarket system that is designed to drive coil packs. But then you are into the realms of cam and crank sensors which will probably negate the reason for doing this in the first place - cost.
