Sorry this is about my modern. Just looking for a bit of support. I was driving my XC90 today and the car in front jammed on and I went into the back of it. I have submitted dash cam footage etc and the insurance are sorting it all out. I have never had a bump before so it's all new to me. Anyway copart are taking the Volvo away on Monday and it will be assessed. It's a 61 plate XC90 r design. 147k. FSH in very good condition. Damage - needs a bonnet, grilles, bumper, fog light, crash bar, rad pack.
I'm in limbo now until it's assessed. Can't even have a courtesy car until they decide if they are going to repair it. Value I guess is 8k looking at Autotrader.
Any thoughts on what they might do? Repair or write off? I'm hoping repair as it's a great car and I look after it.
Many thanks
Jed

Hi, It's very likely it will be written off. If you want to keep the salvage and repair it yourself don't let them take it away because you will never see it again.
As well as the damage you can see, there may be more, plus labour, paint and any other incidentals like fixings.

Thanks Colin. They said they had to take it away to assess. She did say I could buy it back if written off. When you look on Autotrader the ones at 8k might be ok but until you see them you don't know. They only start at that price. I'm anxious they will write it off and I will struggle to find one as good for the payout.

You won't find the same one with the pay-out, they're always guaranteed to low-ball you. Does it have bi-xenons? They're usually silly money so will tip it over the edge.

Yeah it does but they aren't broken. Policy states market value.

Never take the first offer from the insurance company, they will usually go up a bit especially if you can show comparable cars on Autotrader or similar.

I had a shunt in the Merc back in 2019, lady pulled out in front of me so I pursued it as a no fault claim. Anyway the insurance company wanted to take mine away to access it, I refused to let the car out of my sight so they had to send someone to my house instead. Mine was a cat S write-off, so they gave me market value and let me keep the car which I still drive now.
You should have been offered a courtesy car as yours is un-driveable (rad damage). My insurance had a brand new Volvo S90 courtesy car on my drive the same day as the accident, no questions asked.

They said I can't have a courtesy car until they decide what to do. If it's a repair then I can have one. If it's a write off then no. Hoping it will be decided soon after taking it.

Adrian flux is the broker and markerstudy is the company. They car in front slammed on and I went into the back. Unfortunately it appears it's my fault.

I would have thought they would treat that as 50/50 blame, but if your insurance are admitting liability that may be why they arent as helpful as they could be.
Not telling you what to do, but from what you've said I'd find a better insurance policy come renewal time.

It wasn't a Tesla in front was it? They have form for suddenly doing fully automated emergency stops for no reason. There have been several updates and there's a class action in the States about it.

Yeah it does but they aren't broken. Policy states market value. The problem is they use CAP (Current Auction Prices) as that's their market. We had a Saab 95 Hirsch estate written off a few years back and couldn't even get a standard aero for what they were offering.

There's no way a rear end shunt would be contested as 50:50 unless you had footage showing a massive brake test for no reason.
