i have now a Burgess bandsaw, its quite old, and if it worked right, it would do the job i want it to fine. But the blade keeps coming off, and also, it cuts slow. The things i want to cut with it is say 2.5" exhaust pipe, 3-4mm plate, and just general other bits.
is there a bandsaw that will suit me that isnt so expense and not massive?
it will nto be for wood, only metal thanks!

The one in the Aldi link does 1400 rpm, which is way too fast for cutting steel, the only thing you'll probably achieve is instantly dulling your saw if you're lucky, or the band snapping if you're not. The bands you can get for small hobby band saws are usually not suited for steel anyway, they're really only useful for woods and plastics.

Have you tried adjusting the tracking of the wheels?
Edit: I just googled Burgess band saw, is yours one of those 3-wheel jobbies? I can hardly believe that cuts 4mm steel plate.

Wow, what make/ type bands do you use? I have a small FERM saw (FLZ-275), but the only bands I can get for it are for wood, plastic and maybe brass or other non-ferrous metals. I don't think the type of motor allows for the speed to be dialled down (mine only has one speed), so I would think it's no good for steel anyway. Mine is spot-on for my usual needs, if I need to cut thick-ish sheet steel I use a mate's professional metal cutting band saw, or a jigsaw for short cuts, and a hacksaw-type cut-off saw or an angle grinder for pipe etc.
If adjusting the tracking doesn't work for you, perhaps you can get new tyres for the wheels? I replaced all the bearings in mine when I got it (second hand), which made it run much more smoothly.

its when the blade catches, it some how jumps off. its quite a slow cut, it takes maybe 3-5 mins to cut 50mm exhaust pipe. the blade came from ebay, it is for steal.
maybe it does need new tyres! i think the best option for me is to fix what i have then.

I've just bought one of the evolution chop saws, it seems completely wrong but it cuts steel pipe & bar amazingly.

The best thing for diyer is usually to get a horizontal saw and fit a plate to the lower blade guide so you can use it as a vertical when needs be. Even I do that over having two machines.
