Thoughts please on a daily driver, comute 150 miles per week, petrol or diesel, trying to keep away from VW and blue oval. Fancy something french, tastefully lowered with nice alloys. Open to any thoughts you may have, pictures of anything interesting always appreciated

Most important question, will you be going anywhere near a ULEZ area? Renault Extra or Citroen C15 if not Or even a Renault 4 (I don't know what your budget is) Bit newer, but you can get them with a 1.2 petrol lump (which maybe ULEZ compliant), this one has a 172 engine

Well, if you can find one..... I bought one in 2004 for £500, a LWB High Top Diesel that had been used by a farm shop to haul tons of potatoes. It was BRILLIANT! It was used to move us to Mallorca, our whole life ended up in the back of it and it hauled us, without fuss, all the way there with my foot to the floor. It was comfortable, spacious and bullet proof, however, it was not local Mallorcan proof as a resident t boned us, at speed, at a junction. The van was written off but, had it not been so well built, they would have written off my wife too. Highly recommended!

joem83. There will be no need to be ulez compliant, that c15 is simply cool, must say I haven't seen many modified quite cheap too. My budget is decent so don't mind an old vehicle funds will be available to make it right. The R5 is also of interest becoming rare these days...but the R4 with Gordini alloys and lowered slightly is a sight to behold....really like these Renault's had a look a MK1 trafic, very good condition haven't seen one modified so that is of interest

+1 on the Renault extra. Had one years ago and loved it. Surprisingly refined

I'm not going to say Nissan Cube because mines too modern, but when I bought it I was looking for a focus/golf/whatever estate with a view to cart loads of old çhod about, and found the cube. It's more vanlike than the estates I was looking at but authough it's square its not that long but I did manage to force a 6ft long c5 in there last week. Older cubes are a bit smaller, but if you've got the budget for older and cooler go for it.

I’ve got an old(ish!) Astravan. I do a few more miles, averages at 300ish a week and sometimes some longer runs of 100+ miles (have done some 300 or 400 mile round trip days) so chickened out on going too old and went for things like 5th gear instead. French stuff I considered Would have liked a 309 van, but couldn’t find one. 205 was a bit small I thought Have seen a couple of Renault 5 bubble vans come up since. But not when I was looking The R4 was out of my budget anyway Had a kangoo a few years back and they weren’t quite old enough in my head Looked at a C15, but with the mileage thought it’d be hard work. Really happy with the Astravan, old enough to be slightly interesting and have done just coming up to 30k in 2 years

Cheers guys for your thoughts on small modified vans so let's spread our wings a bit more and look at midsize vans, again looking at something different, not really interested in VW. Let's see what's available from across the channel. Cheers in advance
