It's been about a decade since I had the opportunity to go car shopping, I've been lucky enough to have had a little selection of super cheap cars fall into my lap, a free Punto, a free MX5 that I got 2 summers out of and a P2 V70 that has had a slipping clutch and multitude other issues for the 3years I've had it. Sensing the imminent end of the V70 and the 940 being nowhere near ready to see the road again, I had been looking to a find myself a cheap, interesting, reliable daily. First things first, see the Volvo off. It's been a decent car, easily the best £170 car I'll probably ever have, abit thirsty but very comfortable. I don't like scrapping cars if it can be helped and was sad to see it go but I'm not spuffing £1200 on a clutch. I wanted something I'd not had before, a 4wd, but I also wanted to save some fuel which narrowed down the options. After looking at some awful Freelanders, a couple of nice CVRs, I actually ended up going back to buy one of the first cars I looked at, a mk1 HR-V Joy Machine! It's a low mile (57k) D16W1/manual with the optional 'type V blue' interior and roof spoiler, it has obviously been used sparingly and looked after. There are a couple of dings to take out and chips to touch up but I'm fairly happy with it. Just needs a deep clean and polish now. And now my driveway looks like this! Super stuff. No massive plans, a full service and timing belt, keep it clean, keep rust at bay which I think will be the biggest task, and enjoy it. I do fancy some different wheels though, 5x114.3 so there's loads of options ( penski has some TriBars that could work and kevfromwales has some 90s 3spokes stashed for my perusal)

Had a W reg HRV as a 'stop gap' a few years ago. Paid £600 for the 150K miler. Got 3 years use out of it putting another 25K miles on it. Still running spot on when I sold it for £300. All it had cost me over those years was part of an exhaust, two or 3 tyres and the bit of welding I had to do.... The back end of the sills, inner & outer and above inside the wheelarch are a real rot spot on these. Oh the only other thing was A s/h alternator. The original one seized... they seem to lie in direct line for water pouring down there when the bonnet is opened. Great car though. Towed my racing SIMCA surprisingly well too. Yours looks a really good example.

I love HRV’s
Especially in 2 door, odd colour flavour.
Looks good from here.

I was literally thinking yesterday, when was the last time I saw an HRV (I had one for about 2 days some time back) I really like them, but I will say one thing, WATCH THE FRONT DRIVESHAFTS. They have a rubber damper on them, and water gets trapped and rusts the shaft. Rusts it so much that it gets thinner in that spot.. and then snaps in half. Civic also suffers from the same problem. If it is getting thin, take it off and reinforce it. If it snaps, techincally you could sleeve and weld it (I have done it on my one) but it will be hard to get it perfectly aligned / balanced.

Cheers guys, I'm really happy with it. datman , I've had a look at the front shafts, they look okay at the moment but I'll keep an eye on them and maybe source some replacements in the meantime.

I really rate the Honda HR-V and CR-V. We bought a 06 CR-V as a car to keep for a couple of years but that didn't go to plan as its been here over 7 years now. If its fitted with the dual pump 4wd system its worth the expense and time to do a dual pump (rear diff) fluid change and flush. Cox and all the Honda dealers sell a kit of the correct fluid. As the fluid ages it can cause a few strange issues when turning at low speed.
I test drove a 5 door HR-V when we were looking for our current car but ended up getting a CR-V as with both dogs and both kids it was a little cramped in the HR-V rear seat.
I can't see us getting rid of the CR-V anytime soon as its such a useful car & its only down side is the 20mpg around town (2 litre automatic).
Your HR-V is a superb colour & so much better than the normal bland colours.

I've had lots of MK1 and MK2 Crvs. Excellent cars and surprisingly rust resistant. I rescued the first one from a breakers yard. I like the autos being column shift. People seem to like stealing the cats off them these days sadly.

Thanks mate, I'm really enjoying driving it and working my way around it making a list of all the little bits it needs, which isn't much. I actually drove a couple of CR-Vs, an '06 2lt manual and a '05 auto, both very nice cars, I like the coolbox in the dash and the center console/drinks holder/shelf thing. I'm going to miss having a front armrest too but I just don't need the space and wanted to save on fuel. It is a great colour, though I do like that purple/blue that they came in too. You're not the first to tell me to listen out for the rear diff on tight turns at slow speed, I think I'll do the fluid anyway just to know its done.

I've already been warned that the cat is worth money, going to get the fabricator at work to make a cage for it.

When we were teenagers Mum had a near new 1999 HR-V 3 door, D16W 5 speed, identical to your one but was silver. My brothers and I were never actually rough with it but we pedaled it around fairly hard and had that dual pump 4wd working pretty regularly - probably what kept it working properly!
Fun little cars - keep the updates coming!

Little update on some of the bits done so far. I changed the dual pump fluid, what came out looked like ATF but I used legit Honda DPS-F I didn't even need to jack it up which is still a novelty. The driveline noise has gone completely and it seems to lock up quicker, win. I spent a bit more time on the front brakes which seem to have stopped the squeaking for now, fresh pads are in the boot so I think I do that anyway. I've got a cheapy bluetooth headunit coming, nothing flash but has the spec to power a sub which I have tucked away in the unit. A good afternoon invested in a deep clean, including making a start cleaning underbonnet and also getting all of the underseal overspray from around the arches. It seems to have done the job, though I think some sort of cavity wax/waxoil situation needs to happen this summer. And I've worked out what I'm looking for wheel-wise, Freelander 1 HSE 3/6 spokes. A nice little bump in all dimensions and offset should fill the arches nicely and still look pretty OEM once I 3D print some centercaps. Some more pictures, not much has changed since the last lost other than maybe being a bit cleaner,

I really like these and yet I know nothing about them so i'm going to pick your brains:
I thought they were all two doors and had the funky spoiler like yours, is this true?
I had no idea they are 4 wheel drive - are some front wheel drive only? I'm guessing the 'double pump' caper you have been talking about is some kind of viscous LSD in the back?
Is the 4 wheel drive part time, engaging when it senses grip being lost like the VAG Haldex system?
Is it a bespoke floorpan or based on a Civic?
Could it be lowered a la 4wd track car vibes?
or
Could it be lifted with some all terrain tyres like some kind of squared off baja sand dune stormer?
Yours looks like a reet nice example and thank you for bringing these back to my attention

I changed the dual pump fluid, what came out looked like ATF but I used legit Honda DPS-F Did you change the fluid then drive it then change it again? That's what the CRV manual recommends.

Yours looks like a reet nice example and thank you for bringing these back to my attention I'm new to these cars too, so I'm learning as I go. They came in 3 and 5 door flavour, I think they launched with the 3 door though. The spoiler was an option, there was 2 different spoilers, with or without a brake light. They did both 2 and 4wd, the 4wd isn't selectable, if it detects slip on the front axle the rear engages with hydraulic pumps. The floorpan is Honda Logo with built-up suspension mountings to gain the rideheight so Honda could avoid putting in a new trans-tunnel for the 4wd, I don't think lowering is really an option other than -30 or -40mm springs, not sure about raising it either, though they seem reasonably capable at stock height with aggressive tyres.
