Whatβs wrong with the steering box ? Leaking or play ? It's both, according to the garage, and to be fair there is about 5cm of movement in the steering wheel before anything happens... Might just leave it! There all like that . MoT gives 75mm of free play , measured at the steering wheel , engine off . Not sure where your based , but iβd be happy to give a 2nd opinion . I check taxis for safety compliance as part of my job . π

Wish I'd thought of putting a bezel around the voltmeter - it's bright as hell I just wanted something to go where the meter used to be...and I presume you've worked out that the switch is for the TAXI light on the roof. But of course you can't have that lit up on open roads Good job with the headlights, although from what I remember a lot of the damage is burning on the inside. That said, if you've got flexible arms there's only 4 8mm nuts holding them on from the inside of the wing if you want to pull them out for a closer look. That USB is a feed for the USB-in on the stereo - does it provide a 12v feed for charging other things too? Never knew that... And that nest of wiring is indeed for an amp/subwoofer setup - I unhelpfully (because it's all I had) used the same colour cable for live and earth. I'm 87.3% sure it's all disconnected though The solitary rear speaker on the back 'parcel shelf' should actually be working...at least it was...but bah gawd it was weak. I'll stop being nosy and let you get on with your project...feel like I'm doing too much of this

I am in North Yorkshire (Harrogate), which is probably MILES away but if it's not I'd happily ensure a few cold beers are yours....

Thanks zeberdee. Yes Leicester is a long way but appreciate the offer as always! As a general update, last night I spent some time doing some more in-depth cleaning of the interior (which was pretty good already, thanks to previous owner Paul for that one!) and put the luggage-area mat into the washing machine (20 degree quick wash, 600RPM spin, overnight on the radiator for you laundry fans) and it's come out like a dream! The wingmirror is arriving today so depending on how work goes today, could be a job for later on!

Updateeee... Now the boy is back at school following an epically bad stomach bug, I've had chance to do a few more things.. Yesterday I tried getting the dashboard off to see how everything is connected, got part way through, got grumpy, realised I was going to break something, stopped. A job for another day! Put an aerial on the back, hasn't improved the reception of Radio 4 so I'll have to stick with pop-punk and emo from the 2000's for now. In more constructive updates, the sprays for doing the wingmirror have arrived, but not the actual platinum silver paint! We're moving house on Friday and this is the garage... I wonder if it'll fit... Messed about with piccollage on the iphone to see what the taxi would look like with moondiscs and silly flame decals.....

How could I forget this! Very taxi-chic and the mounting holes were already on the seat frame. Ace.

Just moved house* so it's been too busy to update since the wingmirror and fire extinguisher got done... although a TX2 is a great tiprun vehicle...
BUT
I HAVE A PROBLEM (well, two)
The battery won't hold charge overnight, which leads me to think it's got a parasitic drain somewhere (Voltmeter shows 13.5-14V when engine running)
AND
The rear electric window fuse keeps popping - replace fuse, turn ignition one click, windows work. Start taxi, immediate fuse pop...
Where do I start with trying to diagnose these things? Got very close to scrapping it yesterday due to sheer frustration but then remembered the ferries are all booked for Bergerac.... I've got it booked in with an auto-electrician in April but would like to sort it myself if possible.. am not brilliant with electrics!
*The new neighbours are bemused

Getting closer to greatness... went off to buy a multimeter from Eurocar parts, why have I never owned one of these before?!?! Anyway, battery was testing pretty good, did a battery draw test by starting the engine and seeing what it went down to, that was okay, no obvious parasitic ampage drains... then I discovered this cheeky situation... Removed it, left it overnight, started up just fine. New one ordered! Electric windows also started working (with a new fuse) but then stopped later on, so more investigations needed there....

Ordered the wrong size lead didn't I? Anyway, mega update 'cos Sundays are the days for fettling... First up, tighten the timing chain cover at the bottom cos it was having a little oily cry onto my nice drive. Tick! THEN Sorted out the electric windows in the back* THEN Cleaned the engine bay to make it slightly more pleasant to work on (featuring making a total mess of some paintbrushes whilst agitating). Didn't use a jetwash, just a pressurised spray bottle thing that you'd probably use to water your Auntie's plants.. THEN Primered and painted some of the bits of bare metal that were showing from when I took the wrap off it. Pretty horrible but at least it's a passable from 10+ metres. Finally I've leave you with a picture of a lovely sunset being ruined by a cantankerous taxi *I stood there for a while pressing buttons but got a bit bored....

A few little jobs done this weekend... first up was a new earth strap from the negative on the battery to the engine block, easy enough.... placebo effect.. then swapped the wipers round to stop the "spoilers" catching on the glass, took 1 cool point off the tally for getting that one wrong.... The next things on the list are some stuff I can do myself - Full service - Coolant flush and refill with red stuff - The Glow Plugs (not looking forward to this one) Then we're into stuff I can't do myself but want peace of mind as I head into France in a few months..... Got a trip to Slough and back next week.... Find the taxi's twin on the latest Car Throttle video....

Updateeeee
Been a bit quiet cos I've been putting some miles on the taxi. Think of it like an extended shakedown before I do the France trip later in the year.
First up was Reading and back, which is 500+ miles, then I did Slough and back (another 450-ish miles) which all passed without any issue... some observations
- 60MPH is probably the sweet spot between forward progress and stress levels. It can do more, but it's just not worth it. - Average MPG is 41 on the motorway, which I'll take. - The plan to try out vegetable oil has been paused until the limits on purchases are gone. People cooking food is more important than me saving a few quid on fuel. - When payday comes around I'll be getting a service kit and doing the oil/filter, fuel filter, flushing out the radiator and then tackling the glow plugs.
I forgot I left my trolley jack and axle stands with my parents... think I am going to need them for this next bit!

Good work putting some decent mileage on it. Certainly helps with the confidence levels before taking on an international trip.

Double check you don't need a primer bulb (or make sure you have one) when doing the fuel filter. Given it's Transit-based my experience is that some already have it inline, but not all of them π¬
