Hi everyone!
I'm in the market for a retro people carrier/ child chariot...
I need a car that can carry 3 children, one in a baby car seat and 2 on booster seats, me and the Mrs will be in the front OBVIOUSLY
It has to be retro and be able to be lowered...
I'm literally open to ANYTHING and I have cash waiting... Max I can spend is 4k but ideally I wanna be paying less than that, I'd like an mqp prairie ideally but I just wanna see what else is out there!
So all inspiration and sales posts are welcome here, cheers guys!

I saw a Mk3 Renault Espace the other day for the first time what seems like forever. They would look ace lowered over some motorsport-y 19s with a BTCC inspired paint job.

Putting £4k, MPV, oldest first into Autotrader, there are a few imported Toyota Previa / Estima and Nissan Elgrand at the big 7 or 8 seater end, and Berlingo/Kangoo type cars at the small end (Ignoring the Vauxhall Agila as probably too small ). Would an Estima or Elgrand be too big? (I'm pretty sure the Elgrand has a detuned 350Z V6) In-between there's the older Renault Scenic or Citroen Picasso, and there's always the Fiat Multipla (I could only see facelift versions on Autotrader though )

when we had 3 in child seats i ran an E38 7 series, although an E39 is probably the same width across the back seats
way more fun than any MPV you can mention

Mk1 Renault Scenics were bombproof, unlike the later ones. I literally couldn't kill our old one even 35k miles after the auto box of death started playing up at about 100k miles. Expecting the car to expire at some point, I did one final oil change with some £3.99 oil from Lidl. 15k miles later on that same oil, it still hadn't expired and I reluctantly changed it again. Eventually the battery died and I was running it to the end of the MOT and insurance period using my jump pack under the driver's seat as the main battery. Eventually sold as scrap for £240 as it really needed a new gearbox as well as the battery.
So in summary: sturdy, unlike the later ones. Nice and compact but huge inside with the seats out (they come out really easily). Plush velour interior is soft and comfy-as. Soft plastic wings mean it doesn't look like you've crashed when you've crashed. Only issue is they're assembled in the typically French car cack-handed order and nothing is easy to access without taking a load of other stuff off.

Zafira A's are getting there now, the newest one being 17 years old this year and the oldest being 23. I have owned 2 of them and I am getting rid of 2014/15 Meriva for one next year as they were genuinely brilliant motors. The GSI if you can get one 200bhp and is good fun to drive.

Honda Stream with the 2L vtec. Happy car and look good with lows (if you must !). Massively reliable things. James

I'd be very careful around old Zafira's... The front subframes do like to return to nature and they are hidden away behind undertrays... As a friend of mine found out when his suddenly tried an ultimate stance on the A3 at 70+ after hitting a pot hole, fortunatley he was on his own in the car late at night and manged to bin it via the hard shoulder into a verge but it was a write off and that was some years ago... grotty subframe anyone?

Don't get a Zafira though, whatever you do with it, it's still a Zafira .

My old one personally didn't have the undertray because I knew what a PITA they were, the one before had it, it had surface rust so was cleaned up and treated, it was inspected by myself on a weekly routine with the cleaning.

Cheers for all the suggestions guys, I do like the idea of a slammed povo spec zafira on banded steels but that rotting subframe does worry me!

Since it's not been mentioned, and I feel obliged to as I have one, Mazda Bongo. You might struggle on your budget, although you should be able to get a later model "tintop" (this model doesn't have an upstairs) for around what you want to pay. You'd be looking from 1995 (first year of manufacture) up to maybe 2000/01. A few known issues but tend to arise due to poor maintenence, if you're not an idiot and try and run it into the ground then should be pretty good. Came with; 2.0 petrol 2.5 V6 petrol 2.5 4 cyl diesel (2WD or 4WD) Mainly autoboxes but rare manuals do exist.
