Fond memories of these, back in the day when we travelled in the back sat on the spare wheel Will look forward to updates First thought is the Isuzu 1.7td fitted to Astras and Cavaliers, I fitted one in my Astravan, and know that they are often mated to rwd boxes but no experience of that sorry. But 82hp standard, and easy pump mods for more with mechanical pump etc Edit: just realised that 82hp is only 62kw, so a fair bit less than you were looking for, sorry

I used to work at a Bedford dealer in 78-82 and ordered the Cf vans. Standard factory diesel in UK at that time was a gutless perkins. Everything else was petrol, either 1.8 slant 4 for 18cwt version or 2.3 slant 4 for 22cwt. Very few diesels were sold here because the Perkins was dog slow and majority of diesel vehicles in UK were all trucks and buses in those days. Colour is factory Cargo Orange.
That may be a more modern replacement or a market specific spec looking at it. Perhaps its from another rear drive GM product such as Rekord ?
My mate had one with a Rover V8 fitted, just saying.........

Needs a bigger hammer mate.......

end of the day there is no different is there Perkins or GM anyway gearbox last ratio is 1:1 and rear diff is 37/7 or 37/8 what makes it like 5,2 or 4,6
it gives us feeling that if you put brick on gas pedal and drive 4. gear there is screaming engine like 4k rpm. and speed is under 60 mph.
i cant fit there bigger engine 1. i don't want to make major bodywork 2. and more important i cant exceed front axle weight 3. i like to keep it simple and reasonable for young guy
was looking diesel engine MB om611? from small car and from sprinter van i saw that van engine is more narrow at the top
we are looking forward

Next idea Vw 1.9 tdi engine Vw syncro / 4wd gearbox with welded diff and removed front driveshafts so made rwd box. How this sounds ? Wouldn't a vw LT or crafter engine / gearbox work more easily ? Nice find OP, watching developments with interest. James

Next idea Vw 1.9 tdi engine Vw syncro / 4wd gearbox with welded diff and removed front driveshafts so made rwd box. How this sounds ? What box does the Amarok use, and are there any in scrappies yet? I've heard of folk using them to put VR6s into 924s...

Or BMW or Mercedes 4cyl engine and box?

Bmw engines are wide in top. Mb passenger car engines too. Bedford engine bay is narrow in top.
My vw idea is from Passat b5 and with 4motion. It is longitudinal engine and box

I would have thought a RWD Transit, Iveco, LT or Sprinter engine and gearbox would be best.
Failing that, rather than trying to make a 4WD gearbox 2WD, particularly complicated VAG group stuff, I’d pick the engine I wanted, the gearbox I wanted, and I’d make them fit together.
I understand that you are limited by what is available locally, and what you have to hand. There’s going to be the added complication of getting the gear-lever far enough forward too, whichever option you go for.

probably easier to chop the engine bay a little and fit a complete BMW engine/box, but change the cam chain before it snaps, if using a 4 cylinder
