So, after a year's impeccable service including holidays, vintage furniture collections and many, many doggo days, the arrival of a van into the household means it's time for my V70 to find a new home.
I'm in Mirfield, West Yorks (near the Brighouse junction of the M62) and the V5 is here in my name.
Lots of info below but in summary this is an on the button, VGC petrol auto with loads of MOT and tax to get you home.
Overview
It's a 1998 phase 1 V70 with the B5254 petrol engine which is a 5 cylinder 2.5 litre turbo unit. Transmission is automatic with sport, winter and economy modes.
It is the cross country model but now, like most of them, is running in 2 wheel drive (FWD) mode. The prop was removed some time before I got the car and although they can be bought new from European suppliers, they are eye wateringly expensive and second hand ones are very hard to find - I've tried. It wasn't a very robust system by all accounts. The plus side is increased performance, better economy and the fact that this would be a £4k plus car if still AWD.
It is amusingly brisk when required with a fantastic analogue growl from the 5 cylinder engine at full chat but it cruises at high speeds for as long as you want in a quiet, unruffled and assured way. There are no warning lights illuminated, no overheating, no clonks or untoward rattling etc..
Key Info
MOT until August 2022 with advisories for corrosion on springs, surface rust on subframe and minor oil leak: see full history online, there's nothing to scare you.
Currently taxed and insured on a classic policy
Mileage is 151k with service records noted in the book for all the car's life
Cambelt changed at circa 118k so another 20k before recommended change
Pearl Green metallic (only used on 'R' and XC models) with excellent ivory leather interior and cream carpets, correct XC overmats and rubber mats over the top of them
Ice cold aircon and heated seats - I'm going to miss those beauties
Electrically adjustable drivers seat
Decent factory audio
Removable tow bar/ electrics - I've not used these
4 matching "General" Sport tyres with loads of tread and a matching spare tyre which I will include for the spare alloy.
History
The car came to me from a deceased estate. The car's had 3 former keepers and the last owner was a former submariner (see the sticker on the car pictured below). Some of the bills, the key for the tow bar and the spare key for the car didn't materialise in the owner's belongings but the service schedule is covered in the service book, together with the owners annotations of additional work undertaken such as cambelt, replacement steering rack, quality tyres etc. There are some bills plus an invoice for £725 last year for a full brake overhaul on all corners. It's unusual to find a ph1 V70 with a working handbrake! The car has been loved.
There are some minor dinks and imperfections around the bodywork but for a working estate getting on for a quarter of a century old, it's really, really good. There's no rust on the bodywork. Today's mad sunshine has made the car look different shades of green in some of the pics - I can assure you it isnt!
The cross country mouldings have protected the usual V70 problem areas of arches and front wings as they were meant to. I'd have no hestitation in getting into this car and driving it anywhere. If we agree a deal, I might well deliver it for you if that helps ... but you need to see it in the metal really.
Bad points - the aformentioned MOT advisories if they bother you/ only one key/ exhaust box casing is starting to corrode but no blows - can't think of anything else.
Let me know if I've forgotten anything. Viewing welcome but don't come mob handed or we won't be doing business. Cheers, Nick
