What's left of a 1999 range rover P38 diesel manual is sitting in my yard, engine out, 200k plus miles and not MOT'd for over two years. Since I'm unlikely to get round to it, and I don't really like it I stuck the reg into one of those collect your car websites. They've offered me over£400, which seems like a lot of money to me. Downside- I've got to put the nonrunning engine back in. Am I missing a trick here? Is the cat worth OMG£££ or something?

Scrap prices are high so worth ringing round locally - its a heavy old thing so worth some cash. James

Scrap is high at the minute. I keep our local guy sweet by leaving him all the bits from cars I work on, chuck the odd cat in for him too. He doesn't question anything, I send him a message and he collects the next day.

Scrap is about 170-180/ton for car grade, alloy wheels are 1400+ a ton, windings are nearly a grand a ton.
Cats are absolutely mental at the minute, depending on the engine it could have over £500 of cats on it. (Edit- diesel so Proably only £100-150)
It’s quite conceivable that on a 2 ton+ car they could double their money in a few hours with a bit of processing.

probably easily double or triple your money selling the parts off, sounds like you have it in bits already!

Scrapped my 2005 E-class Merc last week, got just shy of £600 for it, I had it advertised on eBay for a lot less!

Scrapped my 2005 E-class Merc last week, got just shy of £600 for it, I had it advertised on eBay for a lot less! Not too disimmilar situation with Mrs H's old Zafira A. One of the online places gave us £350 scrap last month, which we were very surprised by, but happy with! It had 180K on the clock, no proper history (I did most all the work myself), it was (over) due a cam belt and was also going to need a lot of welding for the next MOT. One of the main chassis rails was badly delaminating (damaged underseal had retained moisture...) and the rear of both sills was showing signs of delaminating too, so would have needed doing the following year, as well as a sill seam in a door shut blowing as well. It was all doable, but really all not worth the effort or money on this example, especially as similar spec ones on ebay with that sort of mileage weren't going for that much more than the scrap value. Also, I really didn't feel comfortable putting it up as a private sale due to all the known faults, so scrapping was a much more hassle-free option.

Well shells were 140 a ton last week so not exactly mega money currently. The prices places are paying are as much about parts sales as scrap value I think.

Sold my sister's 2002 Hyundai Coupe last week. As a scruffy car with a short MOT and needing welding for another, various bad paint repairs showing, multiple exhaust repairs, tired suspension, split radiator and driven home like that so it ran rough, needing a timing belt selling it got £350 from Redcorn.com. That's one 30 second internet session, two phone calls(one of which was from the driver) and it's gone. No haggling, arguing about condition or any other grief. It wouldn't have made anywhere near £350 if sold privately, and that always means dealing with people who should have been put down at birth

Got a price online of 240 for my lupo last week. I used scrap car network for this lupo and a yaris I scrapped last year. Enter your details, pick a collection slot and get a call from the driver when he's on his way. Cash is in the bank a day or two later.

I got £275 for the really nice one owner 65K Miles Corsa that was sat on my drive for a year from the scrap guys. I advertised it on her for £100 and got knocked on the price as there was a dent on the cill.... Weigh it in. P.

Got rid of a fourtrak the other week which I brought for the engine and box. The online dealers didn't want to know as it didn't have an engine. Local scrappies just messed me about, not turning up when they said they would etc. In the end I punted it on Facebook for £350 and a chap brought it to strip for the rest of the parts. In the end it was very easy.
