New ideas??mini1968

Have been trying to think of something slightly different to do with my mini. My problem starts here: the mini scene seems to be all out of new ideas and full of some really crazy ones. I have had some ideas but not sure if they would work style wise, e.g big stretch on deep 10's, bonnet blocks, anything else you guys can think up. Thinking along the lines of euro look. Engine wise its a standard 998, was thinking bike carbs but then thought throttle bodies, my friend has designed a really good programmable ecu for fuel injection (for any car) that runs his mini amazingly well and i think his imp too(he should be kicking around here somewhere but free bump for him any way www.canems.co.uk/). Basically any input from you guys for some new ideas would be a great help my aim is to get it finished over christmas. Thanks

You need to look at whats not been done in the mini scene and whats going on in others,i always wanted to build a salt flat racer style mini on really skinny rims.Thats my 2 pennies worth.

Throttle bodies on a Siamese port engine is a whole world of Pain Do yourself a favour and stay away from it, either SPI or twin bike carbs A mate is one of THE top OEM Calibration guys that does this stuff day in and day out, he has a Midget running on EFI and throttle bodies but it has taken him with all his experience, years to get it to work properly Seriously, go mappable on the ignition side but stick with Carbs unless you go for an 8 port or BMW 16v Head conversion

Thanks guys all this is a great help bike carbs have always seemed the favourite, really cheap at the minute aswell. The salt flat racer seems like a great idea. Have got programmable ignition on now makes a huge diference to the running and starting.

Think about what influences you have, what you like, and do it. Euro, cleaned look on wide rims with stretch, sexy colour? done well with quality, its sounds perfect to me.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

always fancied doing a mini in laquered bare metal with carbon roof/arches.
Fully stripped but not race style, just stripped down.

Have a read of this article what I wrote on the subject of coming up with different ideas. There are a couple of quick win, short hand ways of doing an easy thing. The easiest thought process is to apply a style to a vehicle its not usually done on, I'm doing a euro look Datsun, Slater is doing a bosozoku style Peugeot. Both ideas are pretty lazy (at least in the ideas department, Slater is doing some serious engineering), but they will both work. The other short hand idea requires a bit more planning and thought is to create a model that the manufactuerer never made. 2 door Integrale? Mk3 Cortina Van? MG Midget Speedster? JPS Mini? I hope for my next style based modified car I can pick up a design principle, or some similar such defined way of approaching something and apply that. This however is probably the hardest approach to take, but if you get it right you end up with something outstanding I still love the idea of a Mallard based Volvo Amazon,..

An Amazon that looks like a duck? Well, that's certainly a different idea alright....

take mini. repaint burgundy. sit on cream/magnolia morris minor 14" rims. remove bonnet, colour code engine bay (not engine) to match the rims. engine tuned to what you want but must have slight upswept twin su's or amal gp's with enormous ram pipes that sit on the scuttle panel. slam the fugger over tucked rims with beauty rings only. do not deseam. maybe frenched headlights, mk1 grille, indicators in headlights, flushed '40 ford rear lights. must have full chrome bumpers mounted as low as possible to eccentuate the lowness. voila- period trad rod style mini

Get some sixties Nasa graphics on the outside, bare metal the inside, lacquer, use old airplane seats and have a big lump of moon rock for the gear shift.
Actually, that's a shi t idea.

Anyone made a Mini lowrider before?? Should be able to use less hardcore hydros due to size and weight... mini pulling some three wheel motion would be pretty cool...

Yeah, I've seen a couple of Mini lowriders. They really don't work (IMO) - too short and cute. I reckon a low needs to be big or at least brash as standard.

I also like B&D's idea, going old style. It just depends why you are modding, what you do, what attracted you to the car in the first place and and what do you like? You may however just want a show stopping car or something different for the sake of it. if thats the case, time to get creative.

Top grammar tips! Bought = purchased. Brought = relocated Lose = misplace/opposite of win. Loose = your mum

I find Mini's really difficult to (virtually) style. Some great suggestions above! Particularly digging the salt flat racer style, that would rock How about a survival style Mini? I'm thinking spare wheels on the roof, slightly raised stance with mild offroad/winter tread 155/60/13 tyres on wide steels, steel mesh on the windows, a massive fuel tank or two, and lots of parts adapted from other cars to emulate 'keeping mobile' with whatever you can find. Matt black or simular would look good with the above
