That’s a beautiful S800 🤤. How did you find that as an experience? The engineering in them is very cool. That Beat is pretty much exactly how I’d like one. I won’t be splashing the cash just yet though. I was lucky enough to find an excellent condition one as the picture hopefully will show. They have more than doubled in price since I sold mine so it is very unlikely I'll be having another one. It was all set up correctly with a superb exhaust note and a great little car to drive especially on country roads. as for smiles per mile it was probably my joint second favourite car I have owned
That really is a peach of a car.
it was one of my better purchases as it wasn't actually for sale and I had only gone to look at a Honda motorcycle and this was lurking in the corner under a cover, long story cut very short, I didn't buy the bike but managed to buy the car about 6 weeks later. I believe it is now in Japan

Right, It has been long overdue that I get to the electrics and the mechanics of the Speedster.
I'm off to Ireland for a couple of weeks at the start of August so I want to get as much done as I can before I go so that I can really get out for a bunch of longer drives when I get back.
With that in mind I had to go and collect some things yesterday.

What did I get then? This nice haul: Outside of the boring but necessary air filter, oil filter and gaskets and spark plugs I also secured some tastier and hard to get items. Tasty being this complete set of new disks and pads that fit with my OEM calipers and 15 inch wheels. Rare being this set of floor mats. Now these are very hard to get your hands on, especially in this LHD Speedster format with the short passenger footwell version for those of us with the passenger footrest. My driver's side is holing through in one section so this is great. What's also in this haul is some new seal for the boot and a gearbox that I didn't feel like throwing into the back of the 86. I got these from Xavi and I very much enjoyed checking out his current collection of UP GTi (stock), Caterham 7 2000 16V (modified), ND MX5 2.0 (modified) and 718 Cayman S 2.5 manual (stock). He's got a great garage of pure drivers cars at the moment.

Well that's just picking up stuff isn't it? Indeed you'd be correct. What I also borrowed from Xavi was his multimeter. Last October the lights started to play up on the Speedster culminating in them giving out completely on my final run of the year over the Klausen Pass as I noted here: Hit the Klausenpass after work yesterday. It's a very famous hillclimb road. We came from the Altdorf (Wilhelm Tell country) side, which is very narrow, but perfect for the Speedster. It was an awesome run and great for a last drive before it goes back into the garage. It's definitely time as the light issue I mentioned graduated to a problem and I had to drive home with my finger keeping the full flash pulled for 40 mins or so. It showed how good the lights are that in that whole time I only had 2 other cars flash me. To my chagrin, I left it like that for the past 8 months. Now I have been exceptionally busy but come on man. I was only driving the car in the daytime and that's a bit of a limiting factor! I don't have a multimeter and after yesterday I've not idea how I've managed to function as an amateur, actually make that novice, mechanic for the past 25 years without one. I pulled the 4 main relays and the 5 main switches and got to testing. In the end all seemed fine. I then went outside and checked the continuity in the car. Again, all seemed fine. So I'm stuck but then I look at the relays again and see these 2 looking a little bubbly: Now they are showing ok on the test but running a higher reading that the other 2 Bosch items. You can see where this is going right! I have a root in my spares and find 2 old Bosch items that test fine and in line with the other 2 so I pop those in the car instead. First run though of all the functions yields no change but the second round of testing and BOOM, everything is working as intended. Am I happy? Well of course. Do I think I've solved the issue for good? No, I do not but the next step is to buy a bunch of new Bosch relays from the motor factors and go again from there. So great. One thing off the list that has been there too long. I have lights, a fan and a functioning horn. I'm on a roll. On to the next thing.

That left me 20 mins in the window of the day where I had no more meetings and the time I needed to go and pick up my kids. What can I do in 20 mins? Change the spark plugs seems reasonable. It's 3.5 years and 20,000kms since I changed the plugs so it's definitely time. The last time I changed them I was greeted with this: Now that I'd given it a good introduction to my custodianship it was time for a service and a few modifications Lets start with the plugs. That looks a little too orangey for crows OK OK OK Not OK I was not that concerned that I'd be greeted with the same thing as I did have the coil pack off last year when I did the manifolds but that was still 15 months ago so you never know. In any case I was relieved to see all is in order. No unwanted water ingress. Plugs are slightly different in construction but a double check shows they are to spec so in they go. Progress achieved.

Just organized access to a mate's lift on Sunday morning so will complete the service then. Much easier than messing around with ramps.

I also have a couple of spotteds for you. The first I didn't manage to get a picture of but it's the first time in many years I've seen a car I've never seen in the metal before. A GLAS 2600 V8 drove past my house on Saturday. Have an internet picture for reference: Then something a lot more common (once!) but just as fantastic to me. Look at how clean this Jetta is!!!!! I have seen this knocking around my local area for the past number of years but it's the first time I've seen it static. It's incredibly clean. You can see the love that's been lavished on this from new.

The Speedster has been called for it's bi-annual roadworthy test, 2 years and 1 month late and 4 years since the last one but nonetheless it's time. I need to give it a once over in the next 10 days. In the meantime, some more spots for you, 944 cab .. and for those of you with an adventurous streak, how about this project, for sale at 8500 CHF

The Speedster did not turn a wheel in August. I was away for the first half and when I returned the battery was dead. It was too damn hot here for 10 days to think about driving the car so it sat until yesterday when I pulled my finger out and jumped it.
As the test is coming next week I need to go through it and tidy up a few things. With that in mind I'm going to Xavi's place on Thursday as he's on garden leave between jobs at the moment and we will go over it.

I started working through the Speedster on Thursday last week. I'm at the point where I need to get the lights aligned tomorrow morning and then it's degreasing and cleaning the rest of the day. They want to be able to eat off the cars in the test centres here. I have been told by many people it's not worth my while going at the lights myself so fellow GR86 and high horsepower 4th gen. Supra owner Hans is sorting me out at his family's Audi dealership. They need to go in this way... As these are not particularly pretty photos have one of the 86 I took coming home from the office last Wednesday. It's a great view.

Test was this morning. Referring to my previous comment I had to get the car cleaner than it's ever been in my ownership. That meant doing something I had never done before (and won't again until the next test) and run it through a tunnel wash to really make sure the underneath was spic and span. Here's the engine cover I installed to .... well cover things that may be overly interesting to the inquisitive tester. Finally, the result. Booya! I'm delighted with that result. It was close as the light issue from before that I knew was not solved raised it's head a couple of days ago. I'm pretty sure it's actually related to the battery terminal connections. On the way to the test the lights would not come on. I purposely hit a couple of recessed manholes hard and got them back. At the test he checked the lights first and then did the emissions and the suspension. When he pulled back around he told me the lights were not working but as they did when tested I was good to go. I'm chuffed.
